I appreciate your bold simplicity, lol, it doesn't seem to be that easy! All the dogs at shelters remotely in my area are either big or very high energy. Every time I see a good candidate, I call and it's gone, like that! But like I posted earlier, at this point I'm thinking of just contacting all the shelters near me, tell them what I want and having them call me if something along my lines becomes available.

To the others who asked the status on the dog I posted, I'm still trying to get through! The line has been busy literally all day.

They close in a while and when I called after hours last night, I discovered they don't have an option to leave a message, so I just keep dialing.

Just wanted that out there. If you have a local dog rescue, you can make friends with a worker or the owner and they can keep an eye out for what you may be looking for.
I work at a rescue and we have literally hundreds of dogs in and out, nearly none have been the right mix for me to foster. I have to find a dog who will not stalk[to protect the chickens] and one that is either a puppy or subordinate to other dogs[my dobie only makes friends w/dogs who aren't in his face] so it's hard. I would love to take them all home, but my own dog dictates what I can.
But I digress, the friend at the rescue can help you find what you need, they could foster that dog once you pick it out and you can visit more often until you realize yes or no to adopting it.
I see you are no longer looking for a Chi but a Spaniel, lots of those on CL. I doggy-sat one, he was such a sweetheart and what a looker too! Black and tan king Charles, made my fiance want one, hehe.

I AM NOT getting a St. Bernard. The visual of me with a St. Bernard in this small cottage is beyond laughable. The poor thing would try and turn around in the living room and send my clutter flying!
lol.png
And that's not even imagining me trying to WALK it!

I know, I know, they're gentle giants.... but NO!

It's so great that you're taking it so seriously. WAY too many people rush into things like this, and that's why so many animals end up in shelters.

Wow, I'm full of typos tonight, BAD. I just noticed I said he would send my CUTTER flying. I meant clutter. That sounds great. No I do not keep a giant cutter in my living room...

I would say you really need to go by each individual dog, not by breed. Is it at all possible for you to visit a local shelter? They have some older dogs at one near me, and not only are they calm and sweet, but they are less to adopt ($25).

What I mean by going by individual dog, is this: Most Jack Russell Terriers are hyper/yappy dogs, but I had a female from 8 weeks-14 years, and she was a great dog----good with kids, not yappy, affectionate and pretty calm. I have a Chihuahua now that is the nicest one I've ever met------I always HATED Chihs, until I met this one----he was over a year old when I got him ( he is a little yappy----when he hears someone at the door or sees a strange dog outside).

I think Spaniels are nice, but have heard of some that couldn't be housetrained, and some that were biters. I personally like Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos (or mixes of those, such as Lhasa-Poos and Shih-Poos). An aquaintance of mine has a Malti-Poo, but has had trouble completely housetraining her.

Anyway, good luck as your search continues!

Edited to ad: Most breeds mixed with poodle are smart, as are poodles.

I went back and read about the 2 spaniel mixes and saw their pic. I think it would be a wonderful match! But this is coming from sonmone with 4 dogs, and the motto of "What's one more............." But I think the dogs should stay together, after all they are losing theior master as it is. I personally think you should adopt them.

I had the same thought about when I was looking to adopt a Borzoi but the breeder had two Borzoi brothers, never been separated since pups. Well I said I would give them a try and see if I can handle them both. They were the BEST dogs I could ever ask and those twosome double the fun for me! Never regretted the decision either. Whats bad was when one brother died and Otto was so lonely and sad so I stepped up for extra love and care, he loved it. Two years later, Otto had to be put down due to skin issues.
