The tap tapping of her heels echoed through the empty room as Emily stood to go, taking her empty coffee cup and a stapled stack of papers with her. They needed a signature and she needed to go eat something.
Elbowing the door handle open, she pressed her back against the door and opened it, then set off at a brisk pace for Ioan's office. She didn't encounter anyone on her way, for which she was slightly relieved. All the students were either still in the cafeteria or in their first class of the day.
She had only arrived at the school late last night, her flight having been delayed by stormy weather, but she was here and happy to be. The relief she'd felt when she received this job offer was enormous. Life at her old place was becoming unbearable, full of disappointing memories and only the sound of herself to fill the apartment, and moving away was the very best thing that she could have done. Here, it certainly wouldn't be quiet or lonely.
She knocked lightly on Ioan's office door then stepped back to glance down the hall curiously. Perhaps she could find a student willing to give her a tour of the place later.
