China disgusts me

I'm not saying that that is right either. I am a vegetarian who is very well aware of the issues - downed cows and all the horror that goes on. It makes me sick and has for a long time. My point is that it is nothing near as sadistic as torturing an animal to death in order to increase it's flavor or skinning cats and dogs alive for their fur. There is a big difference there. You cannot equate the two in my opinion. As a people we are not baying for blood, watching slaughter of animals as a spectator sport. In China apparently, that's quite a popular past time, not an anomaly.

I am not an expert on the subject and this has become very tiresome. I have learned a lot from the postings of those of you who have been to China and have spoken up for that country. I promise to learn more about it and perhaps someday I will visit that country and see how things are for myself. For now, all I know of China is what their government does and what observers who have been there have told me. I have seen news footage shot by reporters. I participated in an Amnesty International conference many years ago that focused on China. I had the opportunity to speak with people who had emigrated from there. The stories they told of human suffering were distressing. I think the stories of animal suffering that have come from there are distressing. No place is perfect, but it seems China has a little farther to go then the rest of the world when it comes to humanity and tolerance.

I think there is more to worry about when the Olympics come to China than the concern over the air pollution......

When you visit these third world countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, China it is hard to believe there are so many disturbing activities taking place there, that affect the lives of animals it is very unfortunate and your absolutely correct it is the governments responsibility, I know there has been a crack down on many exotic animals used as health remedies, like turtles which made in to a soup is suppose to cure cancer and like so many others utilizing parts of bears, tigers etc. these have not been proven or disproved. We can only hope that the attention to this horrible treatment of animals is remedied and the government places laws in effect but even they will have a hard time enforcing. It takes more people like yourself to bring it to everyone’s attention and I know you are aware of the so many good people who are in this world that are humane in their treatment of life.

Hmmm, I often wonder about the US governments treatment & interogation techniques of POW's & so-called terrorists. The Arar case is quite the topic up here in Canada. And the world already knows all about Guatanamo Bay thanks to the media. Sometimes when you are on the outside looking in, you see things in a different perspective.

Good point. However...no matter what my own government does or doesn't do right, it is still morally wrong to me to cause needless suffering to another living being (husbands home late on trash night are excluded LOL).

Or...two wrongs don't make a right....or calling the kettle black might get you burned fingers.

I don't always agree with my governments stand on things either...troops in Afghanistan bcomes to mind among others.

But I do agree that no matter what, the government was elected by a majority in free countries such as ours Terrie. And for that reason, I respect that I can try only to do what I consider right for me. I have no control on others views or actions. I cannot change China's position on animal or human rights, much less that of the USA's. I can however express my beliefs through my wallet. I try not to buy goods made in China, but that is next to impossible. I also refuse to purchase items made in the US. I try to support the Canadian economy as much as possible. I think that it is related to my many years as a business man.
