That is horrible. I don't think there is much I can add to it.
And I agree the idea of zoos needs to be changed. Once went to a really big zoo, I was 16 and super excited to see the Wolves. Those poor things.. you could just see how bored they were. It made me sad and I had to leave. I cried at the time. It's been another 16 years later, and I'll never look at a zoo the same way again.
A few years later I visited another zoo. Their chimps were on the other side of the glass, looking out at me. I could look in their eyes.. I could see how horrible, and hopeless they felt.
Every time an animal breaks loose and goes on a rampage I think that's what they get for locking up an intelligent creature and expecting it to calmly submit. I have no idea why they think that an animal kept in a cage (enriched cages are better.. but you are still talking about complete lack of freedom) is going to keep it's sanity. Now, I think it's horrible when someone gets hurt, don't get me wrong. But it should also be a wakeup call. Animals were not meant to be displayed like works of art. I appreciate Disc and NG channels and their terrific videos. Yes, sometimes it is heartbreaking.. but at least the animals are FREE.
I guess I disagree that the U.S. cares THAT MUCH about animals. I think we are much better than China, but some of our regulations are ridiculous. Consider, for example, the battery cage laws for the UK over the US.. our standards are HALF THE SIZE per chicken! The UK has many more laws to protect poultry than we do, and seems to me fewer loopholes.
Anyway, I digress. I feel completely sick to my stomach..
I wish this thread would have a warning in the title about the nature of this discussion.. some of these images (not just the article) will be with me forever.
