China disgusts me

I thought folks were upset b/c of the treatment of the lions. ????

Lived in China for a couple years. It is one bizarre place and, yes, they have a 180 degree way of looking at nature than we do.

Or do they? A friend just got back from Vegas and told of a entertainment venue that consists of trainers throwing raw meet at a glass wall which separates the viewers from lions. So what fun, they can make the lions jump for their diner while entertaining the masses. UGH.

I think zoos of all kinds are a 19th century throwback that ought to be rethought.

What you're describing to me sounds very much like the what went on in the 19th and up to the late 20th centuries. From what I have seen over my lifetime, I like to think that the world is moving ahead, addressing those problems, and making real strides in improving the lives of workers, animals and of the environment. China hasn't even made it to where we were 200 years ago. They have a long way to go and I don't think they even care.

By the way, the worst part about that article is not the lions - did anyone read about the chickens?

"The buses have specially designed chutes down which you can push live chickens and watch as they are torn to shreds."

Unreal! This reminds me of reading about the Romans - only I was always relieved when I was reading about their barbarity that it was all in the past. This stuff is actually happening in my own time and it's an outrage! I wish someone would do something . . .

Thank you for bringing a different perspective on this. IMO, lots of different cultures and countries have differing views of life on this planet. I would not claim that China is the worse or the U.S. is the most humane. All I can say is that people would do ANYTHING for money for any reason. If you feel you need to boycott something, go right ahead. It's your dollar.

This thread is a bit out of control. Yes this article clearly illustrates animal cruelty in China, but you mustn't condemn an entire nation of over one billion individuals for such an act. Lets try to be culturally relative here, we have our own problems here in the US that can be looked at in the same way. Each culture views animal rights differently and one should not judge another for it. There are some things which are inherently cruel through our eyes, but not necessarily to another's. The meat that supplies our zoos likely comes from animals who have endured a life of suffering on concrete and squaller raised in factory farms which in my eyes can be seen as quite similar to the brutal yet short suffering of an animal who was likely raised on pasture.

As for the other mentioned issues concerning China, such as the food an toy recalls... we have nothing but our selves to blame. All we look for in the US is the cheapest product, and big business is looking for the biggest profit. With these ideals, all concern for health, safety and human rights are thrown out the window and then we use the developing world as a scapegoat, blaming them for the problems that sprouted from the seeds we ourselves had sown.

That article didn't surprise me at all nor did I even cringe. China is at one
end of the spectrum on their treatment of animals. We are the other extreme
with groups like PETA and the like. We humanize animals to a flaw.

I have serious problems with economic, political and environmental issues
related to China. Then there is the way the treat their own people. I don't
dare mention some of the things we know about that, but trust me, it makes
dangling live animals over lions look like childs play.

This topic really doesn't belong on BYC.

I agree with a 90% of your points here.

What I don't agree with is your conclusion that "we use the developing world as a scapegoat, blaming them for the
problems that sprouted from the seeds we ourselves had sown". Sorry my friend but things are a lot more complicated,
and a lot different than that.
