Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

I don't know but good in theory.

Yes! It works! Find what's in demand locally and start hatching. I sold every guinea keet I could hatch last year for 3-4$ each. I only had 2 layers, but those 2 birds paid the feed bill for the whole flock all spring and summer.

I have 9 layers this year!

I think I need a bigger bator!

I had a lot of running to do today, but did stop at the house 3 times and then ran out again.

First trip home............the eggs were here!!!!!

I think I have a few more coming. I just hope I get some hatched this time.

So my first trip out was to pick up some new birds. I got a new Game roo, 3 bantam cochins and when I saw a pair of Polish hens (off colors but had to have them) I figured why not! Well the other seem fine, but the Polish I think have a respritory infection. I'm almost ready to just cull them, but going to try some meds and see. I wish I had checked them out before I bought them, but unlike any other time, I didn't! I'm so mad at myself right now I could scream. So now I have two Isolation areas, because I needed to quarentine anyway, but the others seem fine and don't want ot take a chance.

Somebody kick me!

Thanks. I got lucky, I am going to be able to pick up some adult birds locally to replace the lost ones. They are the breeds that I want and I like their birds she hatches. And of course I just had to pick up a couple of juveniles today.

Does anyone on here know what the difference is on Black Sex Links?

I think I have a full load for the incubator set up. I may have a little extra, but will only have to hand turn and adjust till Sunday, when the ones in there now will go into the hatcher. I also have 4 quail eggs in the hatcher now that I am hoping to hatch out any time now.

HI everyone..............
Well my addiction took over my good sense today.
I purchased an SLW and a big RED. closer to orange.(.I know the name and cannot remember right now.)
Not RIR.more orange.... Not sex link,,,,color is solid. Dang, I hate when my brain takes a break.
Anyway, they are less than a year old.look very healthy and are social.
I got them and brand new feeder and waterer for $25.00.
If a person wanted to go crazy, there are nice free hens in CL in our area .
Folks in town bought them during good weather and just want them gone now.
I am to afraid of bring something bad ino my flock. So mostly just read the ads.except these two.
The lady I got these from did not realize they would poop all over and tear up her flower beds...........
O.K. Thursday is set day,right?.
I have set aside 12 eggs so far.
I am trying to get a large variety of colors.
I have some very light, with almost a pink tinge that I think may be from my English Orps.but not sure.
Cannot catch them laying.

OK everyone I'm in.

This will be my first hatch in the new built homebator.

I expect 48 black ostralorps & 8 welsummers sometime wednesday (13th!)

I have the bator all warmed up (been running for a week now just working out the bugs) & I am ready as soon as they arrive!

Can't wait!

I hear that shipped hatching eggs don't do better than 50% - Im hoping for better than that - but heck 50% on my first ever run would be pretty cool!

A coyote ate my rooster the week after x-mas - so I had to buy eggs

I wanted different breeds than these - but the ostrolorps were less than $1 each including shipping! cant get much cheaper than that.

My wife told me I should have bought a rooster instead! Ha - what fun would that have been - In 3 weeks I'll have 25 or so roosters to choose from !

Good Morning,
Sterilized the incubaters last night and will fire them up today and calibrate the hydrometers.

After a few days of sun and 40 degree weather,we have taken a turn.........
The winds are up and it is cold.everything was frozen in the barn midfternoon yesterday and snow expected today.
I am amazed that we have not lost anything with the winds being so strong.
Chickens seem to be doing fine but I am worried about the goats delivering n this.hope they wait till better weather.

Are we going to run a contest or just enjoy each others company during the hatch?
I am willing to donate a dozen eggs.........

Good luck to all..set date is creeping up quickly

Yeay!
I love my post office....the truck leaves exactly 5 minutes after close every day so I get there 20 minutes ahead of it and the boxes go out, on top of the pile. That's the nice thing about living in the middle of nowhere, things are so predictable! Nothing like in the city where I once had a huge box sit at the post office for a week solid because "we didn't have time to leave you a note" ugh!
