Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

Yes....I too will think of fun contests. I am hoping my shipped eggs all get here in time. I might of saved 2 dozen of my own to set too

I have 4 "accident hens" that have been laying like crazy and I am excited to see what comes out of these eggs. I will explain the accident...... I have a Lavender Ameraucana rooster and last year he must of had a few unknown "visits" with my white silkie who was supposed to be brooding some eggs.

Well she was brooding the ones I gave her and she decided to add 4 of her own. SO when they all hatched, all 11 of them (yes she sat on and hatched 11!!!!! ) I had 4 odd looking ones. Those babies, 1/2 silkie and 1/2 ameraucanas have been the best layers this winter. So they are bred back to the Lavender Ameraucana since they all run together, this could be fun to see what they look like.

YAY!!! I will be able to join the CNY hatch, even if it's only with a few eggs!! I will be candling on Monday (day 10) to see which ones won't be viable and then on Thursday I will go ahead and set a few more eggs for a staggered hatch... I got two eggs so far today from my 14 girls so I am a little hopeful!! I already set those two eggs aside for next week and whatever I get between now and then will go in for the CNY hatch! Maybe my girls just needed a break! So, count me in!!!

I am really nervous about this! My first hatch was horrible and 0 out of 18 hatched... My second hatch was 26 or 27 out of 36.... Both of those were with homemade bators.. This time I have 71 set as of right now (had 72 but one broke and put wax on it but didn't notice the hairline crack until yesterday!) in a brand new hova bator and it's awesome as far as holding temps and humidity!! I've never done or even attempted a staggered hatch!! anyone have any advice for me!?!?

Perhaps a best Egg Picture or a Best Incubator Picture contest for the first week. I think it'd be fun to see how people pose up their eggs for a picture.

I am also still able to donate a dozen hatching eggs from my flock as a prize. I will have Serama, Sumatra, Serama/Cochin designer chicken, and coturnix Quail eggs available this spring for the prize. I will possibly have some button quail eggs as well this spring depending on this hatch and the ammount of males I get. It would be more allong the lines of a Gift Ceritificate since there will be no eggs until mid february or march. Possibly sooner.

I got an egg from my Coturnix Quail Yesterday. I'm hoping it's fertile, she's in with a male.

So sorry to hear about the coyote attack

I'm glad they didn't get any more than that!

The screen on my laptop took a dive.

The dinosaur is up and running now while we ship it back to get fixed.. gonna miss sitting in the recliner to do my 'puter stuff!

I got 18 serama eggs in the mail today from Pearly Sue, and have another dozen coming that I ordered before I heard back from her. So, these will be my eggs for the hatch. Fingers crossed for good results! Incubator is heating up.. I tend to have trouble getting it to settle in a good spot!

OH NO!!!! I just realized that to join the hatch, I would need to set in two days!!!! I was thinking it was NEXT thursday! I mean, not that it's a horrible thing but I only got 4 eggs from my girls today and thursday will only be day 6.. I will have to candle 4 days earlier than I wanted to to get rid of any that are not viable... Hope my girls are helpful and start laying a good amount of eggs for the next two days!! UGH!!!!!!!

I HAVE ANOTHER BROODY! Exactly 3 days after my GLW hatched out 3 chicks... now the partridge rock is broody...

PLEASE SOMEONE TELL MY CHICKENS THAT IT'S WINTER IN MAINE!!!! If she breaks my will then I might be joining this hatch. Hopefully I'll be watching from afar...

I don't really qualify, but I have 20 eggs that were set last Thursday. Eight were from a local woman selling them for eating. She had a rooster and the ones we ate were fertile. Six are from about 4 hours away driving and six are from about 6 hours away driving. Both were shipped. So we'll see how this goes. The last batch (seven eggs of which only one hatched) was shipped from across the country, so hopefully this will turn out better. So far we have some development in many of them, a good sign.

And my NYD chick is growing some feathers on her wing tips that appear to be silky frizzles. Cool!

number 1 lesson ive learned this week. if keeping eggs from a certain hen separate to incubate write on the box do not eat i was keeping some eggs from the splash hen to put in bator but while i was away dad ate half them for breakfast
