Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

I like the broodie and chick idea.

I got these cochins so I could maybe get a broodie this spring.

I got my silkies thinking they would do something. I lost one and the other was a laying machine and I hatched out chicks and GAVE them away, thinking I'd have more by now. Nope. No more eggs.

Today I bought more wheat and oats and I'm going to try again to sprout them out. I'm hoping some extras things in their diets will either help them to start soon or at least when they do start up again they should all be in excellent health. Not that they aren't now, but I'm cooking beans and rice and oats and anything I can think of to help them deal with the cold and build them up. Tomorrow I'm giving them rice and sardines for a treat. Forgot to buy more BOSS today though. oops

My eggs just arrived so I am in! I have 24 eggs sitting at the post office waiting for me as soon as I can dig out of the snow.

We set tomorrow, correct? I suppose I can set whatever bantam eggs I got this week....I'm getting too many though, it can't be just the silkies laying....unless the 6 month olds started. Clearly I need to hatch them and find out!

Funniest chick contest idea sounds like a hoot.
Broodies n babies are sweet to look at.

How about a contest for miracle chick hatch? For the chick that seemed hopeless but pulls through and turns out heathy. There always seems to be those in each hatcj group. Contest could involve short story on the chick with picture on why your miracle should get the prize (not sure what kinda prize could be offered)
Anyway just another idea.

Just got my eggs!! I have a couple dozen EE, and 4 dozen australorp, with a few welsummers, and mystery eggs thrown in.. So the inaugural run of the little fridge bator will be 6 dozen eggs... It's been close to zero degrees all week here so I'm hoping the eggs were gathered often enough that they will be ok. I guess we'll know in about 10 days!! I'm so egg-cited!! This will be my first hatch in my home made incubator and my first hatch in about 26 years... bout time I was able to get back into the chicken business!!

Good luck everyone on your hatches!!

I can only fit about 30 in my incubator but I am considering giving some extras to my little black silkie who insists on sitting in the empty nest all day, maybe I will give her something to sit on.

Wolftracks, the prizes don't have to be worth much at all. The contests are just for fun to keep everyone distracted while the eggs are incubating. I think I had more fun watching the different entries in the contests that were run in the NYD hatch than submitting my own entries.

Hello everyone, just lurking around since I am going to wait until the Easter hatch to set eggs again. Looks like you have a good bunch going for this hatch! SCG you should join in with your broody. I am sending TONS of GREAT hatching vibes to all of you!
Linda how did you make out with the TJ egg that went into lockdown a couple days ago?

Today is scheduled Hatch Day. No pip as of this morning. I used the SpotCheck probe last night and the temp is a little low, perhaps because there are only 2 eggs in there, and lots of open space.

I am patient. (Because I am at work all day and cannot obsess about it.)

I'm central time so we'd have to take that into account... who's with me?

Can you stick a few jars of water in there (with the lids on) to help hold heat?
