Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

I don't go into lockdown for a couple more days buuuutttt..... I'm not going to be here on hatch day!! How'd that happen?! Oh yeah, I registered for a show. Oh well, hopefully I will be distracted enough not to be worrying about chickies!

I go into lockdown tomorrow evening. I'll be throwing out the porous egg, it just isn't developing right. Dad stole my candling flashlight and put it in the car, so I have to go and steal it back to candle for tomorrow. Those button eggs are too hard to candle and see clearly, so all of them are staying and the Coturnix eggs are difficult to see around the spots, but I'll try anyway.

Good luck to everyone! Only three bunnies to go until

and then we'll be flooded with chicks.

Hi, Went into lockdown at 7:30 PT..........
Did not candle...............just hoping for the best.
These are my own little mixed eggs from my layers..........
Thechicks in the brooder are getting huge and seem to think they are part eagle............
Need to get them in the barn where they can stretch their wings.

No problem! Egg's out of the fridge, so no development obviously.. I just grabbed it to see what I can see. I look forward to setting a few later on and seeing what I can see then! Forgive my photography skills.

Second day of lockdown. Temperature holding at 99.5 and humidity has been 50%.
So far, so good.

I have a Hovabator and instead of flooding the wells of the transparent tray, I fill a
coffee cup with water.
The cup has graduated slanted walls, so when it is half full, the bator is 50%, 3/4 full is 55 and at the rim, 60%.
To boost it to 65%, I just overflow the cup a bit.

I run some 1/4" fish tank tubing into the cup and have a basting syringe that I use to add water, so I don't have to open the lid.

I find I can control humidity with the cup pretty accurately.
Another advantage is you don't get as much a mess in the tray.
Sometimes the chicks will drink the water. Once I found chicks swimming in the cup!

Last night I bought 18 more Blue Splash Marans from the same breeders as this hatch.
Nice birds, nice dark eggs and fertility has been the best of any mail order eggs I have done.
I couldn't pass them up for 26$! They were calling my name...

I know this is a Chinese New Year Hatch but this is really going to be my 4th of July hatch because that's
when the birds will be laying their chocolate colored eggs!
