By some miracle of the poultry Gods, we are actually able to obtain 10 goslings next week! I really have NO idea how, this guy that we've been talking to has some serious connections in the breeder world apparently. Anyways, he said that they'll be chinese and african, and we get the pick of the lot. (We're keeping 3 or 4.)
Sooo.. We currently have an almost 4 week old toulouse (hatched July 2nd). She's my love, and completely attached to me. We originally got her and her siblings as guard dogs, but I sort of doubt she'll be doing that duty. So, which is better for our purpose? Chinese or african? I've read about them, but I want to know everyone's personal experiences with them.

African geese get into everything if you let them run free. I had 12 and had to give them away as they were killing all my shrubs forget about a vegetable garden. They are not like your Toulouse ...I would do extensive research. African geese

My toulouse eats EVERYTHING. I turned my back on her earlier, and she jumped off the couch (mind you, she's only like a month old) and ate dog hair. OFF MY DOG. The dog is shedding, and I suppose the poufy white thing looked so appealing.. STUPID GOOSE.

We have African and Buff Pomeranian together in a pasture. The African ones are much more watch dog with their noises they let everyone know something is around. They do well together except at breeding time when they tend to be territorial. If you do a little research, I think the African was formed from the Chinas and something else....maybe the Toulouse. They get the knob from the Chinas and the dewlap from the Toulouse.

I have Africans, but haven't gone through a breeding season yet. Mine are big babies and are scared of everything. So much for my "watchdogs." THis morning, Schnitzel, my largest male (I think he's a he) was carrying on because there was a big, scary piece of bark floating in their water.

I had to remove it and then he was brave enough to drink.

It's my first time with geese and I love them, scaredy cats or not!

Jack my chinese hates the mop, but then if he didn't poop so much it wouldn't need to come out so often!!!

I have 6 week old Africans. I was puppy-sitting yesterday and the pup jumped in with the ducklings and goslings when I had my back turned. All the ducklings and 3 goslings ran AWAY from the pup, but one African ran TOWARD the pup honking and hissing with his head down. That pup jumped right back out of the pen as fast as he jumped in. Good thing too, that gosling tried to go right over the fence after him. I was impressed. The pup was bigger than the gosling, but the gosling obviously wasn't going to let that stop it.
