I used to breed Sharpei's. They are VERY prone to allergies, especially to parasites like fleas. They always seem to have a problem with their skin. They cannot be outside in the heat more than 5-10 minutes as they are very prone to heatstroke. (I had this happen one time after I left a female outside for 20 minutes when the phone rang). They are not good in hot climates at all. They also have a very short coat so very cold winters can be harsh on them but not as bad as summer heat.

Thanks! How are they temperment wise, generally??
I had (she's deceased) a friend who bred and showed shar-pei. They had chronic, recurring skin problems and she was continually changing feeds and vetting them to keep them "itch" free. Skin conditions aside, they were really personable dogs.
Oh, this will get me in trouble for sure but it seems to me that they tend to be "one person" dogs. They're fine in a family but there's usually one person who's special to them and they can be super protective of THEIR pack so it takes awhile for them to warm up to strangers.

Thanks! I'm thinking of getting one. Since i only have Daisy now... i think she could use a little buddy to play with...
Just not sure about them yet...

Yeah, thats what i've heard also...
And i do foster care for teens... soo.... i worry if they are dogs that are too protective, and dont like new people in the house. Because i get new kids in here all the time.... so...
That has me worried a bit...
But if they are raised that way..eh.. i dont know... decisions...
I'm guessing that the temperment is a strain issue. The woman that I knew had 3 generations of shar-pei in her home, and none ever showed aggression. That being said, if it is a known breed trait I'd really check out the source and temperment of your dog prior to purchase. Environment is a big factor, but it can't always correct bad genetics.
