Chinese Shar-Pei..Anyone have any experience with them?

From a slightly different perspective, my DH does service work for a living and he has said that many of them are standoffish but not aggressive towards him, a stranger. He's met a few friendly ones, but they're not like your typical "here let me help you carry out all my owner's belongings" Labrador.

And he said, yep, all the owners have said that they have skin issues. (He likes dogs in general, so talks about them with their owners a lot.)

Aside from the skin issues - and I don't think anyone mentioned that they smell if not bathed regularly to get the junk out of those folds - every shar-pei I've ever met was standoffish and a one person dog.

Miz Red, I think about your Duke and poor Daisy every day. There's a forever friend waiting for Daisy at your local animal shelter.

Was working at a vet clinic when they were on the up. Bad skin all around. Problems with the heat and eyes. They even broke me out just holding them. An itchy dog is a smelly dog. Good luck on your search. Wern't very agg. just not very friendly.

If you get one, make sure to get pet health insurance. We see them at the veterinary clinic for skin problems a lot! Also, the ones we typically see are not very nice...but the breeder in the area keeps breeding and selling puppies from parents with horrible temperaments!

I have an aunt who raises and shows Shar pei's. They are definetely a one person dog, but will get along with a family. Not necessarily good kids dogs, but they can be protective of their home.

They are known for their health problems, especially poorly bred dogs. They have a special bathing routine. The smell is yeast build up in the wrinkles. You have to watch what they eat because they are prone to food allergies.

Definetely not a dog for someone not devoted to the breed and there are a LOT of bad ones out there!!!!

They are smart and can be stubborn, but once trained retain their training well. They should be primarily a house dog and actually they prefer to stay clean, not to be dirty. And you need to socialize them well like most dogs. My aunts dogs will all run up and great you and make sure they get their fair share of attention, yet once they are done, they really could careless if your there. However, I would not go into her house without her there.

I was thinking of the shelter too.. but they make you jump through hoops... and that irks me.

Plus, i cant take in any adult dogs with un-known past history... its just too risky for me...with kids in the house.
But maybe we'll check and see if they have any pups...
They just better not irk me...

So.. it sounds like they are stinky, one person dogs, that arent very friendly then.. perfect!

I had a neighbors dog mame my 25 pound wiener dog and cost me $1200. The dog was shai pei/chow mix. I would not own any of those breeds ever. That dog was put down and I had to sue the lady that owned the dog. That dog also bit my other male wiener dog and cost $400 on him.

The injuries on my 25 male $850 of it was paid only because a witness seen it happen.

The neighbors dog ran loose all the time chasing kids and barking at people.

We to this day don't know how are boys got out of the fence both gates latched still and no holes found. We put them back in and never got out again kinda weird. We think someone let them out and that is what happened. When animal control came and seen all his drainage tubes he said the dog was gonna be caught and taken in and put down after 10 day wait to make sure it did not have rabies. The animal control guy said that toddlers weigh that.

The owner of that dog was gone all that weekend out of town and just left her dog loose.

The vet also told us if that would have happened to the 14 pound boy he would not have made it.

I have pics somewhere.

I would stay away from them unless you are willing to spend a lot on vet bills. I didn't see it mentioned but they also tend to have problems with their eyelids being turned under....which means surgery to repair. If you are just looking for a companion for your other dog what is wrong with a mutt??
