Chinnese Geese

I'm awful for singing to our animals... cows, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, geese, dogs, cats, chickens... Sometimes my wife looks at me like I'm crazy. But more often, she joins in.

Geese are not "mean as hell" or "tame" by nature. It has a lot to do with how much they are handled by goslings. I let some of my geese naturally incubate babies and they fall under the "mean as hell" category becasue they are fiercely protecive of their young ones and the young ones are consequently untame. However, they are mostly hiss and not bite. When they snap at me, I usually snap right back at them with a loud voice. It doesn't hurt nearly as bad as getting popped in the side of the skull by one of their wings.

I have goslings of identical age which we incubated and raised in the brooder. Some come right up to me and will sit on my lap. I also talk goose to them "honk, honk, honk, honk... ad nauseum" and they just honk back at me for an eternity. They never get tired of having a "who can honk longest" contest with me. They usually win.

my geese were gotten rid of by previous owners for attacking children. when they first even looked at me, i just put my hand around their beak and hold firm while they try to jerk away. when they settle down, let go. they don't get scared and run away, just hang out, but no more funny business. i acutally did this recently to a goose at a public lake who nipped me and he did the same thing. seemed to WANT to hang out more, but didn't bug me at all. just hung out. i got scared after i automaticaly reached out and held his beak out of reaction to being nipped that a park ranger wold come and say, HEY what are you doing. lol. but it was all good. i dont' like being bitten by anything. one day you will see a photo of me in the paper with one hand and the caption will be........bear tries to bite lady and she puts hand over mouth. lol.

i think they are protective by nature as they like to patrol the yard and will tell the chickens what to do. they will let me know if anyone is even near. feel more safe with them around actually.

i sing rubber duckie song to duck and he does a little dance. wonder what the geese will do for the percolating coffee song?

My geese are not aggressive...unless you go into the backyard without me or my DH. That is exactly how we want them to be.
The geese at parks are agressive because they are starving. Theya re dumped there after being pets or at least fed regularly and properly and now they are dependent on handouts of usually bread, which has NO nutritional value whatsoever. And they usually only get fed this bread on weekends. It is really very sad.

The geese my parents had (one chineses white and one african) were fed poultry feed and table scraps. The african was pretty calm, she'd honk at you but if you walked towards her she walked away. The chinese goose, holy crap that dumb bird was just plain mean. Every time that one came after me I'd grab her and tuck her under my arm like a football and carry her around for about an hour. But as soon as you let her go she'd do the same crap all over again. Never liked that dang goose. But they're both gone now, some wild dogs got the both of them.

i looked at your duck rescue site and at your baby burping cloths. how cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think that the chinese ones are more aggressive than other geese. not sure if they've been bred to be more watch dog like, or people choose them for taht because of nature. either way. they are good at it. my neighbor who is...well...icky....is scared of my geese from bad experiences with other people's geese. probably made a mistake by showing her how to handle them. lol.

eventualy, i will fence in my front yard and that will be the geese's domain like watch dogs.

Well most of these reply don't seem to be on point, but I think the opinion of the ones that were are that, as a rule, Chinese Geese will go broody and make good mothers.

She currently has 8 eggs, so I think they will just let nature takes its course. Thanks to all of you for your replys.

This is what we like to call a "hijack". We waterfowl people are a bit on the lunatic fringe compared with the vast majority of this website. Our manners are primitive.

One of these geese is not like the other one, not like the other one, not like the other one.....

Sorry Mark.

She's Beautiful!!!!! I wish I could find some Brown Chinese Goslings around here, I just have the 2 White Chinese babies i got a while back. they're getting so big already and the little girl is such a good protector, the little gander just sits around with the ducks while she chases anything "threatening" off...she even attacked and beat one of my muscovy hens that was trying to bully the muscovy ducklings, LOL..was too funny... she's only about 5 weeks old.
