Hello,

I am a newbie raising chickens in the Sierra foothills of California and in need of some help with my sick chickens. 2 of my 52 chickens are suffering from what I would describe as repertory sickness. They both display a chocking noise. It sounds like a wet rattle at times. Two days ago it was only slightly noticeable while now they are both choking/coughing every few minutes. I have separated them and given them some yogurt. Both are about 2 years old layers. One of the two has lost her feathers on her underside (however, I am not sure if this is new or she has always had this).

No discharge
Good appetite
Plenty of water
Free range
Normal active behavior

Thanks in advance for all your help and advice.

from SW Ohio.
I am sure someone will be along soon who can give you some helpful info.

Had this happen to one of my chickens once, and I put Duramayacin and Vitamins/Electrolites in their drinking water, very important to isolate them from the rest of the flock, and I also ran a vaporizer with vicks in it on her, which really helped make her comfortable. I kept them in the "chicken hospital" which is a room in my basement.

I gave the flock the meds too for 10 days as a precaution because I did notice a few of them sneezing. Everybody got better and all is well....

I know--it's kind of "over the top" running the vaporizer on her, but I really do think it helped her. I was really afraid I was going to lose her.....worked like a charm.

Good luck to you....

Sharon
