Choosing a breed to specialize in... Help!

silly me! I thought I read that somewhere, apologies, speckledhen would Know better than I! I am curious about the whie egg laying aspect as well.

I believe Barred Hollands are large, meaty birds like Barred Rocks and I'm pretty sure they lay white eggs. Though I don't know if they are classified as a Heritage Breed nor about which catagory they fall under by the ALBC.

Someone, (Blackbird12) already PMed me with that idea.

From what I gather, they are on the list and the White Holland may be extinct already. I'll need to find a breeder for the Holland and post my findings. I would like a white egg layer for the "egg racists"

Edit: I looked through the list of breeders and no one says they breed Hollands. So I googled the breed and found Purely Poultry in WI lists them (barred). (They also have Buckeyes) I emailed them and asked if I could get on a waiting list because it seemed like everyone ran out of stock wayyyyy too early this year. They replied and said delivery starts in Feb. (too soon for me, why fight mother nature with a dozen heat lamps

I have Blue Andalusians hatched from breeder eggs & they are heat tolerant, mine are not 'flighty' nor 'nutty' in temperment-- they are more slender built, energetic, curious,intelligent- more high energy than other breeds I've had/have but they are also friendly, quick to come see me when I come out to the pen & I really like them a lot--including their white eggs!--mine are just starting to lay but they hatched from large eggs & already are laying a medium sized egg. Very good foragers- always out there looking for something & they don't miss a trick. I like them a lot-they are a very intelligent breed.

I love my Welsummers also, they are also from breeder stock, & are very laid back, friendly chickens, don't mind being touched, lay a large dark brown speckled egg (sometimes more speckled than others) & between them, the Blue Ands, & my couple of Easter
Eggers to give me some blue or green eggs for the basket, could not be more pleased with personality & type of these breeds.

My customers - who are only co-workers and used to my "chicken stories" love the multi-colored eggs-no discrimination here!

I know that jimmy47 used to raise Barred Hollands and he did get them from Sandhill. He said some laid white and some laid tan eggs. Generally, I'd recommend Sandhill for endangered/rare breeds. For instance, they are one of the only hatcheries that have decent Delawares.

I think most have given suggestions. I for one learned alot about different breed by taking someones suggestion and looking up everything I could about that breed.

Then I discovered the resource guide. Wow. I didn't know it existed and just realized yesterday that the guide is clickable to change your priorities.

I wanted white eggs, I clicked the egg column and it puts them in order of color! Want a bird for a certain temp region, click it and all the cold hardy breeds are listed first!!!

By having this guide available, it should all but eliminate these questions that I and others have about picking a breed.
