Choosing a breed?

kera! :

I have a lot of different breeds including all of those you mentioned along with a 9, 7 ,3 and 1 year old children of my own,
these girls are all so nice especially the sussex and orpingtons they would be first on my list..I would get babies for sure.

the chickens are all very kind.

Arnt chicks more time consuming? Right now with my older hens, I clean, feed, read an eat lunch with them daily. But I feel like I'm too busy for baby chicks with tennis, volleyball, school, work, and coaching, not to mention chores. Haha, so I don't want to neglect the chicks. Pro/cons with getting older chickens? Thanks!

I have most of the breeds you mentioned. I absolutely love my Buff Orpingtons because they're mellow, lovely to look at, and excellent layers; I just wish they laid darker eggs. I'm addicted to Wyandottes, mostly because they're so beautiful. My BLRs, GL, and SLWs all lay darker eggs than my Orpingtons (I like the darker eggs) and they lay regularly, but they're all rather aloof and don't have nearly as much personality as the Orpingtons. As for RIRs, I've never had one that wasn't friendly and full of personality; I know they have a reputation for being mean but I've never experienced that. Mine are ridiculously funny and friendly. They're not as lovely to look at as the Wyandottes and Orpingtons but I love their personalities and my RIRs all lay x-large eggs.

Of the breeds you mentioned, those are the breeds I'd recommend as backyard chickens. As for flying over your fence, they all could, especially when they're younger. My kids like all of the breeds I mentioned, albeit the Wyandottes tend to ignore them while the Orpingtons and RIRs follow them around like pets.
