Chrissy the broody Indian Runner-She did it!!! (PIC)

I would offer food and water if it was the Welsh Harlequins, but Chrissy is a very skittish rescue duck and normally runs away if you get too close. The food and water is right outside the door of the igloo and we can see no food is missing from the dish. If she doesn't eat today I may try and sprinkle some of her favorite treats inside the igloo.

How exciting !!!! Daisy is back on her nest this morning I think she has 6 eggs now.. She stays on each day for alittle while throughout the day.. She picked a spot behind a brush pile up against the privacy fence in back yard.. I'm wondering how to get her and the eggs into the safe night pen..later when she really get serious.. How many eggs do you think she will lay before she goes full speed ahead???. She stopped 6 days ago laying in the night pen nest box.. and has been laying in her picked spot.. Looks like we will be having ducklings about the same time..
within a few weeks of each other.. I wonder what Daisy's and Stanleys will look like.. ( Welsh Harlequins too) but from metzers.. Daisy has an awful lot of white and no blue wing spectrum ... theres a name for her color but can't pronounce.. I hope she has a couple the same color as my Amy who I lost the end of Feb.. Wish there'd be a gold on in there but I don't think metzers raises any of the golds..

Ok....deep breaths.

She FINALLY got off the nest long enough to gobble some food and drink some water. I saw a wet, beak-sized indent in her feed

I was a total wreck when I hatched out eggs in my incubator and I was hoping this wouldn't be as stressful.

YEAH RIGHT!!!

I estimate her due date to be around May 1 or so. Lets see if I make it that long!

I was puttering in the back yard when the ducks started clucking. They always do when I go out there. They have to check and see if I have treats ya know and figure they better ask

While the girls were making a racket I heard Chrissy in the pen. I peaked in to see what she was up to and got the broody stink eye as she was standing by her water bucket. Then she does the mouth open threatening thing as she shook her head at me. I guess I interrupted her break time. Did she bother to thank me for floating that lettuce in her water bucket? Nnnooooooo!

HOw's Chrissy doing???? Daisy didn't go to outside nest last couple days.. Two days she layed eggs in her old spot in nesting box... Today she didn't lay egg.. I have several wooden eggs in there right now.. and when she didn't leave me an egg today. I went and put 4 wooden eggs in the hidden spot where brush pile is.. it's 11:10 and she hasn't layed in the hidden spot. Nor can I find an egg for today.
Little toote

I have similar experiences with my Runners. First few days I think one has disappeared until I realize they are sitting on a nest full of eggs. Then a few days later I think I must have been mistaken because they spend so much time off the nest. Then suddenly they are serious. Quietly defend the eggs for most of the day with a few intense foraging outings, and then the last few days they hunker down, hiss/growl, and won't move for anything. Mine will leave now for about 5-10 minutes when they are desperate, but if they think I'm lurking they won't budge, because they seem to know I might borrow an egg or two for candling.

I thought mine might be hatching this weekend, but it seems those earlier, not so serious days, delayed the process by a few days. I'm a bit of a nervous Nellie hoping to have everything in better shape for ducklings this time around. Last Spring I thought I had my 'Moms' and their ducklings fairly secure from the other ducks, but had NO idea how tiny the ducklings would be and what they could squeeze through. They were confused and off seeking mothering from my other ducks within minutes of being in the open run (in spite of me thinking they'd be restricted to their own smaller pen) and of course the desperate Mom's couldn't get at them. I managed to rescue everyone eventually and 'herd' them back inside until I got more protective fencing so the 'hardware cloth' from the start is a good idea.

Have fun!!!!!

So far Chrissy is doing fine. Hardly ever off the nest. She only dashes off for a few minutes to gulp down some water, eat some food and then she is right back on the nest. I am not exactly sure when the eggs are due to hatch, but I am thinking the first week in May sometime??

I thought about candling, but like you said, if she hears any lurkers, she wont budge

I have checked all over the back yard and can't find the egg for this morning.. I have know idea where the little stinker layed it this time she didn't put it inn the brush pile.. I have checked bushes, along the fence every where.. well haven't checked under store room cause I won't fit.. Oh my hope she didn't put it there.. if she doesn't keep using it and the eggs go bad hubby will ring my neck. along with the neighbors.. Will have to try and watch her again tomorrow
