Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

I prefer the NIV.

I think a lot of us (sometimes myself included) get all caught up in exact wording versus what the enduring message is supposed to be, and how it should be applied to the times we are in.

All that said, I just have an easier time with the NIV.

Yup, agree totally! Interdenominational Bible discussions can lead to a lot of good fruit. Bible history to be fascinating, and it is also fascinating to note how different the various translations can be, and which denominations prefer which translation and for what reasons.

Cantley, earlier in the thread I mentioned the Douay-Rheims. Since you are Catholic you may find it interesting to compare it to the KJV. The Douay-Rheims dates from roughly the same time period as the KJV (it's a bit older by a few years, actually.)

I've heard of it and we have actually been considering it for home schooling puposes and greater comparisons as well for me and DH.

I'm glad to see that there are some other users of the New Living Translation here. In our church NIV is the default but I was given a great NLT study bible for Christmas one year and really enjoy it. I find it has the same message as the NIV but spells things out even more clearly.

Yesterday in our Sunday school class I was asked to read a verse. The teacher asked what version I was using and was a little surprised. I don't know if that was good or bad...

When I'm really digging into the Word I'll cross reference with my KJV. It often gives a broader view of the meaning of the verse. When I'm really hot and heavy into it I go for Strong's Concordance too. I find it really helps to find the broader meaning of some of those Hebrew words.

Lifeway has a good online resource with different Bible translations and concordances:
