Christmas in October block Swap

Minniechicks~I think your block is just lovely!! Very Christmas-y! I'm going to start on mine this week I think. I still have a little cutting out to do. I'm going to take it to the quilt shop tomorrow and work on it.

Katsdar~I don't have a milk cow now, but we had one many years ago. We milked her by hand. I never could get the hang of it. I could get some milk out, but took forever. DH could do it and get a frothy bucket of milk in a short time! We only had her for the summer. The kids wouldn't drink the milk because the first time we milked her, she had gotten in to weeds and the milk tasted of them. She gave more milk than we could ever use, so we ended up selling her. I had a pasteurizer that I used. I didn't pasteurize it very long. Just brought it up to the temp it was supposed to and then quickly cooled it. Made some butter. It was a fun experience! Just time consuming. Had to go bring her in and milk her twice a day.

Are you sure you can milk her? I would make sure before. We had a milk cow and goats growing up my Gma and I could milk the goats fine, but neither of us were ever able to milk the cow.

yeah I can milk her, I have helped with her before she is a really a nice cow
Kat, stop! You will never be able to leave the place, even long days out will be a problem.
You bring up a very valid point, yep I think I will have to pass, sad I was looking forward to making cheeses etc. oh well, now I do remember they couldn't go far from home. Thanks for bringing me back to reality

Why don't you just buy her milk and make your own cheese, yogurt, or butter? I have a friend who buys raw milk and makes her own yogurt. Not sure what the laws are in GA about buying raw milk, but here in OH you can buy shares in a cow and since that makes you part owner, you can get the milk, cheese, butter, or yogurt. You get the benefits, but not the work.

They are selling her because they want to do some major work on their house and feel they will not have the time, crazy since she has a customer base.but I'm not going to take the plunge, we might just want to take a mini trip and won't be able to, but she did say she would milk her for me if I went away. GA laws is the raw milk can only be used for animals, but if you buy it what you do with it is your business. Just as a seller you can not sell it for human consumption.

We ran into the "tied down" problem also. Always had to hurry home to milk. If you had someone to cover for you, it might not be too bad, but it is the day to day that gets in the way. If you are out of town, want to have dinner with friends, shop a little longer, etc, it can get bothersome.

I understand! Alaska and Florida! That will be so much fun! And the trip to England!!! AWESOME!! Friends of ours just found us a cruise to Europe for next spring! I'm so incredibly excited! We will leave Ft lauderdale. Go to Canary Islands, Gibraltar, Portugal, and end in Rome! There was another one that went to Ireland, England, Denmark, and Holland! DH loves history so we went with the Rome trip. Our friends have been there quite a few times, so they are going to be our guides! I hope if things work out the way we are planning in the next year or two, we can take another trip. I've always wanted to go to Ireland and England! That will be next on my bucket list!
