Christmas Tree = Extreme Fire Hazard

Cutting a Christmas tree in shorts is just so wrong.

ETA: read the rest of the post and see I'm not the only one that feels that way

It is a nice picture though! Maybe we could all send you some fake snow in a can!

In 13 years as a firemen I only remember one tree fire. But I have reason to believe that one was actually started a different way an blamed on the tree. Should always be careful but I don't think anyone should fear a tree.

In the past, we put up a live tree. (not cut) Our very first Christmas tree in our house (same year my oldest was born) is in my front yard. It's now about 8 or 9 feet tall.

Now we use artificial trees. We heat primarily with our woodstove and it dries cut trees out way too fast. Plus I don't like cutting down a tree just to look at it for a couple weeks. And the live trees (of a good size) are so darn heavy. When you have trouble moving the sucker with a dolly it's time for a change. (not to mention they got awfully pricey)

We dig our tree up only have it in the house a week or so then plant it in the yard. Still can be dangerous but not near as dry

Are artificial trees flammable?
I've never had one, but seems like the fumes from one burning would be as bad as smoke from a cut or real one burning, if it came to a fire in the house.

I am ultra careful with live or cut trees - Check the water thrice daily, unplug all lights when sleeping or not home, watch for sparks from the fireplace, tree out of the house asap, smoke alarms with good batteries and.... the one thing I won't live without? A good quality, fully active and charged fire extinguisher in every room of the house, year round, not just for the holidays. With matching flashlights.

Those with kids need to practice fire drills, too.

But, fires from space heaters are far more common than Christmas tree fires.

they also have said on the news that those fake trees that you store are full of molds and dust and even lead, and can make ya sick. so if you are pulling one out, might be good to clean it first.
