My 2 year old EE has been dealing with a water balloon-like crop for about 2 weeks. When I first noticed, it was very pendulous and she was kicking it up with her feet while she walked. I separated her with just water for a day and then just did yogurt and some scrambled egg for a couple days and acv in the water, which seemed to help, but not completely. I thought she smelled sour, forced vomiting one day and got some grass up. Tried 3 days of monostat, which did take away the smell. Now I have her in a crop bra, which seems to help overnight to some degree, but the crop is still not totally empty in the morning. Have also tried olive oil and molasses. She is acting and pooping normally, she just has a water balloon on her chest by afternoon if I don't restrict her food. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!!!

My Speckled Sussex, Jewels, has dealt with the same problem. @Wyorp Rock pointed me in the direction of Miconazole (in picture below). In a syringe, I did ¼ tsp of that twice a day, which was once in the morning and once in the evening with the same dosage each time. (This is giving orally.) In the same syringe, I poured in varying amounts of Coconut oil in the morning dosage. I did this all for seven days straight, and it worked great.

Jewels' tongue started to change color during the week of treatment, but I wasn't overly concerned with that. After a few months, Jewels ended up needing to be treated again. I used just the Miconazole that time, and it didn't work. So for a couple of days I gave her a large dosage of Coconut oil and that helped. So you'll want to do the Coconut oil with each morning dosage. Best of luck!

HI
did your hen get better. I am dealing with sour crop, vent gleet and worms at same time with one hen. I am three days in to miconazole but her crop is just so bloated that I had to make her regurgitate this morning and finally a bunch of stuff came out, a blueberry, grass and cheesy stuff. smelled rank too. I will try the coconut oil and continue the miconazole and massage. do you think I should give water? feed anything? any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks

dont make her regurgitate its very easy to make them choke. Is she passing any faeces?
If it is sour crop, I would withdraw food for now, this means also not free ranging, so she cant get to grass or bugs or anything like that. Water is fine, I think I've heard of putting garlic in the water to help, but dont take my word for it- I haven't dealt with this before and I'm by no means an expert.
@Wyorp Rock might be able to help.

You already have 2 ongoing threads and are getting suggestions. You may want to take a look at those.

I'd treat for sour crop, give the Miconazole twice a day for a full 7 days. See if that helps.

@Wyorp Rock I understand you are one of the experts on this topic and I am dealing with a similar situation. After the miconazole treatment would you expect the crop ballooning to go down? I thought the candida Infection was secondary to a blocked crop so even with the nasty yeast gone you still have a blockage. Have I understood that right? Or can sour crop (ie the yeast infection) actually cause the crop to stop draining?
I guess in a nutshell what I am asking is what happens after the 7 days of treatment with miconazole?
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Do you have a thread, nothing is coming up?

If she's got a blockage, then the crop wouldn't be emptying well, so there could still be ballooning.

Sour crop is from food/water/material sitting in the crop too long and it ferments, becomes yeasty. What's causing the crop to not empty? There's many things - reproductive disorders, cancer, inflammation, infection, blockage, worms...etc.
If you feel she has a blockage then try treating that so it will clear.

I didn’t create a new thread as there are so many on the topic.
Thanks for the response. My hen definitely has sour crop. So that means there must be a blockage I guess.

I'd treat the symptoms of sour and impacted crop according to the article.
Often there's an underlying condition that can cause the crop to slow.
You can try deworming and treating for Coccidiosis too - getting a fecal float to see if those are even part of the problem is best if possible.

Very often a laying hen has crop symptoms due to an underlying condition like cancer or reproductive disorders. Every hen I've ever treated that had crop symptoms had some type of reproductive problem as well. These problems were revealed during home necropsy.
