Cider Vinegar Overdose?

Also I forgot to add, I asked this question because they were scratching their heads and wiping their beaks on the ground afterward, that's why I was wondering. Chickens haven't had vinegar before so maybe they just need to get used to it?

Yes it needs a little getting used to and that behavior is perfectly normal.

I'd say that's WAY too much. The dosage I've seen in other threads is 1 T cider to 1 gallon of water. At a 1:10 ratio you're doing 25.6 T of cider per gallon. That's just over a cup and a half of vinegar per gallon (if my math is right).

Just curious - why are you giving them so much?

Ok, so I put Cider Vinegar in my water in the ratio 1:10. Is this too much? Please answer ASAP.
OMG! I miss read the first post. Yes I agree with 6of6chicks, that's too much. Sorry about that

Just wanted to add - I did some more reading after I posted earlier, and I've found the range to be anywhere from 1 tsp. to 5 T per gallon. It just seems to depend on personal preference. But the 5 T per gallon is the MAX I have seen anyone adding to their flock's water.

From what I'm reading, there's very little scientific evidence (as in studies done) that demonstrate the benefits OR harm done by apple cider vinegar. Again, personal preference. I've read that people use ACV to help keep harmful bacteria in check in the digestive system, which may be true (I don't know). But at 1:10 ratio I imagine that adding that much acid to a chicken's digestive system would seriously disrupt the pH balance, and you may end up killing off ALL bacteria (good and bad). Again, I don't know - I'm just guessing.

But as far as an "overdose" - as in, worrying your chickens are going to die - probably not. Repeated exposure to that level of ACV might make them sick in the long run, but if it was just once and they're still walking around then I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok thank you very much for the information, I read it somewhere that 1:10 was a good ratio, I will change it to ratio 1:50. Does that sound better?
