Cindi's Chicken Chronicles

Meet Rosie

This morning when I went out into backyard to feed Sunny & her little chicks, I saw that there was another mama hen in the yard with ELEVEN baby chicks 😲 This hen has visited my yard several of times, so I instantly recognized her. Today I decided to name her Rosie. She spent all day hanging out in my backyard with her baby chicks and they hung out with me as I sat on my backyard patio. I was surprised that she trusted me to be near her and her little ones. Whenever she'd see the younger cockerels approaching, she'd alert me so that I would keep them away from her and her little ones. She's such a sweet mama hen 💕

I am really starting to think that Chickadee is advertising my backyard to the other chickens 😂

I'm so glad I was able to capture this moment between Rosie & her little one! Melts my heart every time I see this photo 💕

This is literally the cutest and sweetest thing I’ve ever seen! Please keep posting about your adorable flock!
Thank you for your kind comment! My unconventional flock sure keeps me entertained! 😊

Meet Roo

Roo is Chickadee's son from her second batch of chicks. He & his 5 siblings grew up in my backyard and I've known him since he was a few days old. Roo was the alpha rooster amongst his siblings growing up, but he eventually moved out of my backyard in January. Roo moved further up the street from where I live, but continued to visit me daily. Sometimes he'd even bring a few hens with him during his visits, as if to introduce me to his latest fling! Roo eventually formed a flock of his own and had a harem of hens to protect and care for! 💕

If I'm being honest, April has been a tough month for me. There was a couple of weeks where I was absent from Backyard Chickens, because I was dealing with a sick Roo. He hasn't been feeling well, but I was grateful that he still had his appetite. I noticed that he was much more tired than usual and he'd spend hours just hanging out with me and soaking up the sun. I'd keep him company during his visits and sit on the porch with him. Some days he seemed better and more alert, but other days it seemed as though he was doing worse. It felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and did not know what to expect from one day to the next. I've been giving Roo amprolium and that seemed to help a little, but he still seemed more tired than usual.

Since Roo has been feeling sick, he has dropped rank in the pecking order amongst the other roosters. He used the be second in line, but he is now further toward the bottom of the pecking order at number four 😢

On another note, since Roo has been spending a lot of time with me this past month, I noticed that he has been getting very comfortable being around me and has been letting me pet him! This is a HUGE, because none of the other chickens my backyard like to be pet. I'm glad that I am able to pet him and hopefully that brings him some sort of comfort since he isn't feeling well.

It's been a tough month and Roo isn't on the mend yet. I am hoping and praying that he'll get better and make a recovery soon, but I know that there is a possibility that he may not and it breaks my heart to even think of that possibility. I wish I was able to introduce Roo under different circumstances, but I guess that's part of this thread- sharing both the good and the not so good.

I hope that the next time I write about Roo, I'll have better news to share 🤞

Here's a few photos of healthy Roo:

He’s beautiful! 🤩 😍
You should post a thread on him in the emergencies/diseases/injuries section so more experienced people can help you get to the root of his illness. If you do so... tag me and I can help! I’d hate for him to not be treated for something that can be done. :):) Thanks for the continued lovely stories!!! :):)

Thank you for your kind words 💕 You'd think that living on an island full of wild chickens we'd have a ton of vets here that treat chickens, but after lots of phone calls and research, there's only one vet I found on the island that treats chickens 😓 I've been giving Roo amprolium to treat cocci and I have seen some improvement, but I do worry that we may have caught it too late 😟

Roo is lovely and it sounds like he is smart enough to know where to find the best human help to be had - as advertised by Chickadee! Maybe he will make a comeback yet!
