CL Posting in my area... SAD! (Theres more!!)

SERIOUSLY? Umm...thats why they have petting zoos. Don't bring a chick or bunny or duck home and then dispose of it. Take your kids somewhere where they can see (hopefully) happy animals and pet them and love on them. That way there are no more tossed aside or abandoned baby animals.

If your child has such a short attention span...then they shouldn't be getting an animal. If they can't take care of it then they have no business getting one.

When I was 5 I beeeeeeggggged my parents for a duck. I got one. I spent the next 3 years going EVERYWHERE with my duck. I learned early how to be responsible. I was scubbing crap out of the pond at 5 to make my duckie happy.

Kids learn from their parents!

WOW this is exactly what I'm talking about when I mention "Easter Chicks" to people - THIS!!

To think there is someone stupid, brave, and careless enough to post this on CL?? I mean, "give back"?! Just for a couple of days? Does she want it dyed pretty colors too?!

Thanks to people like Cloverleaf for the response.

Here's the return email I got from her...it kind of made me laugh that she's getting all religious with me and telling me "what the season is about" when she'd giving her kids chicks for Easter...maybe she should take them to sunrise service instead. To each their own I guess...

"I am sorry you have taken offense to this and I am not disposing of a pet. We would simply be borrowing the chick for a day or two as an easter surprise, my children know that they would not be able to keep a chicken. I offer money as an incentive for the farmer to let me borrow it the chick would be well taken care of and unharmed in my care and be given right back to his/her family. I dont apppriciate you trying to put a blame on me and that is not what this season is about. Please do not feel you have to inform people on your views in a nasty message. People are going to do what they want regardless, I do not need an email trying to demean my self value, it is wrong of you to try and put that on someone. You dont know me and you shouldn't judge me as I will not judge what you do in your home. He without sin may cast the first stone. Please have a blessed Easter and try to spread a nice message to a stranger instead of a critical one. Thank you."

eta: To me, this isn't any different than someone giving a friend or family member a kitten or a puppy as a gift. My sister gave my grandmother a puppy for her birthday one year...the next day it came to live at OUR house, because she didn't want it, and had no idea how to take care of it!!

Wow, this is how I learned about chickens. There is a reputable Mennonite farmers market that "rents" out chicks for the Easter season. You get 2 chicks, a bag of feed, and a detailed care sheet for $5. You can return them in a few days if you don't want to keep them. I actually thought it was a good idea for my kids to learn about caring for animals other than our dogs. I never even thought about raising chickens. I signed up for 2 chicks, came home and did research (and that day found BYC). We kept the 2 chicks, which turned out to be "meaties". Now I have 31 chickens!

Just playing Devil's Advocate: Maybe she's in an area where she can't raise chickens. She sounds like she's willing to learn how to properly take care of them for the short period that she will have them, so if somebody replies to her they can tell her about the heat lamp, etc. Within the past few weeks I have seen several ads on Craigs List for people wanting to "rent out" their rabbits and chicks. I can't say that I'd do it, but it could theoretically be a learning tool - it sure was for me!

This is just my opinion, though.

I thought it was responsible of her to make sure she had a home for them.
Not sure the kids will agree though.

I don't think attacking someone that may be misinformed if very helpful. It's tactics like that that give pet chicken owners a bad name - someone not to be listened too.

So before sending off a nasty email think more in the lines of educating people.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Ignorance is what has gotten our country's shelters into the state that they are in. I am done making excuses for people. I work in the veterinary field, and I see enough of what "misinformed" people do to animals every day. If she can't handle the responses she may get for such a request, she shouldn't have placed the ad.

This was the email I sent to her.. I am waiting on a response:

I dont think this is a good idea. If you cant keep them to begin with why crush your children when you get rid of them?? Good thinking on your part to have a "plan" for them, that is responsible.... but I just cant get it passed me about how your kids will feel. Have you ever had chicks before?? Chicks need to have a heat lamp on them and be kept at 95 degrees. They need fresh food and water daily! They cant have certain bedding and need special care. Granted they are cute but they arent cuddly! Its not a puppy or a kitty, its a bird! People that raise chickens put a lot of time, energy and money into them. They want to find good homes for them! Have you thought about possibly learning about them and keeping them?? Even if you are inside the city limits you may be able to have hens around for fresh eggs. This would teach you and your kids some responsibility. Please dont take this as a bash, this is a learning experience and I want you to realize what you just posted on the internet. Take your children to a petting zoo, Tractor Supply, feed store or local farm and show them the animals... dont bring them home and turn around and when the cute is all gone get rid of them... That isnt fair to your children or the chicks. Thanks and have a blessed day!!

This is why we educate people. I don't think your method will be very effective.

I think her response was tactful and appropriate considering the circumstances.

Chickens, rabbits, puppies, kittens are not toys to be played with until you grow tired of them! They are living things and deserve the committment that all living things deserve. It blows my mind that anyone can think that such behavior is "responsible." I can and do raise fowl and animals for consumption, but I treat them with utmost care and respect while they are within my control. I truly despise the throw away expendable attitude many people go through life evidencing. JMO opinion. I can not condone animal abuse and neglect.
