CL Posting in my area... SAD! (Theres more!!)

The OP didn't go looking for an ad "to upset people", or to get anyone to "harass" anyone else. It was posted as a "what do you all think?" type of question. Those that chose to contact the person with the CL ad did so of their own accord and for their own reasons. None of us told the person what site we heard about the ad from either, by the way.

Other then the fact chicks need certin things, can you imagine your friends giving you 40 chicks;) I bet it's a guy who wanted chicks for his b-day, btter then a stripper popping out of a cake;)

I don't really see it being so bad. As long as they are cared for properly, I don't really mind someone doing that. It's rather like the school kid who takes home the class hampster for the weekend. Seeing as chicks get shipped across the country in boxes that often aren't handled gently, I don't think they will suffer from the ordeal. I think it's a bit dumb, but I don't think it's cruel or anything.

Agreed.... Now, if I saw an ad that said "would like to rent your week old BABY for a few days, just to test out the idea, and see if I like them".... I might have a problem with that... And what about all the chicks and quail that are hatched out in classrooms with only some vague idea as to what will happen to them once the kids see them hatch? You need to start some kind of campaign about that... Better that she rent them for a few days than buy them outright and they be neglected once the cute wears off....

Not entirely sure I see this as bad either. Not sure it is good, but not certain of its "badness". I have and will continue to "lend" chicks and birds to schools and scouting groups so that the kids can learn about them. Many have never seen a live chicken in person. It really depends on the person and the situation. If I am "lending" the person usually gets me too

For a while at least. If it is scouts I do the whole thing, if it is a class I make certain they can and will be cared for for the day and then pick them up later.

No worse than showing them at a fair - actually usually less stressful than showing since they are usually back in their own coop by the end of the day.

It's "Rent-a-Chick".

If you'd rent a rooster to make chicks, why not rent a chicken to have fun? I'd do it for $10 a chick and give them a free bag of feed and a heat lamp. Odds are they will get attached and you just sold a $2 chick for $10.

It's like a petting zoo, they can take home for a few days. If someone let you take a baby goat (goatling? goatlette?) home for a couple of days, wouldn't you do it? I'd end up owning a goat. Same with a duck.

All of the ones I take home do! The school near here has a hatch every spring. They have become much better about who gets to take the chicks home after the hatch. After they have placed all of the ones they safely can with new homes, we take the rest. Usually lots of roosters in the bunch. Those depend on your definition of a fulfilling chicken life! They live really well right up until the end. Hens we keep forever, or until the local fox gets them.....

I keep one roo, he is four now. He has some hens that are four too.
