Cleaning eggs

I store my eggs in cartons on my kitchen counter. I clean them as we use them. I typically clean them with dawn dish soap and my dish sponge. Curious as to how everyone else cleans their eggs before eating ? My husband believes it could be unsanitary that I'm using my dish sponge lol

Umm... Dish sponges harbor all kinds of bacteria. I'd have to go with your husband on this.

I didn't realize it till he said ummm I don't think we should use the same sponge for the dishes and the eggs . I hadn't even thought of it .... probably lucky we haven't gotten sick . How do you clean your eggs ?

I just rinse them with my hands under running sink water. If they are too messy we throw them to the cats and put more nesting straw in the boxes so they stay cleaner.

Mine usually come out of the coop clean. I don’t want to wash them because I don’t want to remove their protective cover and have to store them all in the fridge. If yours come out dirty I would recommend cleaning out your nesting boxes and putting in fresh straw.

I have been thinking about this question lately too. Can you use a thin scrubber on the eggs under hot water or warm water? I been doing this since 2012. Maybe I should just use my hands. Thoughts on this please.

Do you use the scrubber for anything else? If not and it gets washed regularly then it would be fine. Otherwise I'd just forget about using it again.

The scrubber is only used for the eggs. I don't wash it every time I use it but I do wash with dish soap every now and then. Do I need to wash it every time after I clean the eggs? I didn't think about if eggs were suppose to be washed a certain way when we got chickens in 2012. Hubby is the one that started washing them this way and told me to do it this way. I wasn't sure since we never had chickens until that year. And now we have 8 chicks and one happens to be a roo so I want to do this right if I'm not doing it right.

I store my eggs in the refrigerator without washing (if an egg is that dirty I use it right away or feed it to the dogs).

Generally I don't wash my eggs before using, but if I do, I use a scrub brush that's reserved for eggs (and air dry it after), and running lukewarm water.
