I've done meat chickens for years. but this year I'd like to try some turkeys. so I've cleared off an alder patch , and started a coop. so I'm reading about how these birds like to roost high. can I avoid them flying by clipping their wing feathers?any ill affects from this?such as smaller breasts etc?

You can clip one wing (flight feathers only) and when they try to fly it will cause them to feel unbalanced. However the feathers grow back and they can learn to adjust. It doesn't cause any problem for growth. Some breeds of turkeys are heavy meat bird type and not as prone to flight anyways. Good Luck

appreciate the advice. I'm planning to get meat turkeys , and not heritage birds anyhow. so I'm hoping that the roosting high is bred out of them.
