clothes smell musty... how can I resolve this issue?

They make color safe bleach.....try looking for it in the bleach section next time your at the store.

I am aware of it and have used it in the past.. I find it fades clothes way to fast... Tide is also bad for that

My husband's jeans are navy jean color, and my work shirts are black, forest green and red. I bleach them all as I described when I have to, just a small amount in the water of course. Haven't noticed any unusual fading or spotting.
The sun fades the clothes when they are line drying. I can't say that a small amount of bleach used when needed is any worse on cotton than a summer of UV rays. Everything wears out eventually. My work shirts are about 1.5 years old and they're still wearable. The green one seems a bit faded, but for one thing another manager had it before me so I don't know how it was laundered, and two I think that particular color just didn't hold up as well coz none of our green shirts look that great anymore. We switched to black when we got new ones in.

If you still have a stinky problem... then I second another suggestion here... and that is the Melaluca products.
My mom used them for years and they are really worth it. I think especially a long soak in a thick concentration of that stuff would kill every last booger around.

Kind of.. well.. towards knowing what the source of the stench might really be... I would try an experiment if I were you.
Give him two hampers and have him put jeans, hoodies and such in one. In the other, have him put all the under things, socks, towels, and t-shirts.
Then see which bunch smells more. If it's a re-occuring problem, I'm willing to bet it will be the second hamper. Those things at least would be easier to get the stench out of, being thinner... and then it wont be spreading on to the thicker stuff.

I'm jealous of your washer

I have an idea I haven't seen anyone mention..... When my kids were little we had a bed wetter and that is an oder that is very difficult to remove..... Our Dr. recommended Lysol Concentrate. (it used to come in a small, brown glass bottle but of course now the bottle is made of plastic). I still use it to wash towels I have used on our animals and it takes the smell right out! I get it at Wally World in the cleaning section. Just make sure you get the "concentrate". This small bottle can be used to make up to 9 gallons of cleaning product. Just a splash in the washer at the start of the cycle should take care of it.

FYI.... I usually use a double rinse when I put this stuff in the washer!.

Hope this helps.
