  • Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’m relatively new to chickens; I got my first flock about a year ago and have been learning ever since!
  • How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now, I have a small flock of six chickens.
  • What breeds do you have?
I have a mix of breeds, including Rhode Island Reds, Silkies, and one Ameraucana.
  • What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love watching their personalities develop and seeing how they interact with each other. Fresh eggs are a huge plus, too!
  • What are some of your other hobbies?
Aside from raising chickens, I enjoy gardening, reading, and cooking with fresh ingredients from my garden and eggs from my chickens.
  • Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my partner, and we have two dogs and a cat, who are all curious but gentle around the chickens. I work as a content creator, so I get to spend a lot of time with my animals.
  • Bonus: How did you find BYC, and how long have you been part of the community?
I found BYC while researching how to start raising chickens, and it’s been an incredible resource! I’ve been part of the community for a few months now - until today I registered!

Hi, Ricky and partner! Welcome to membership in BYC. You've already discovered what a great resource it can be. Here is one or two articles I have really found useful (or comforting) as I learn more about chickens:

Common mistakes & how to fix them

Predator protection for new & existing coops

Dealing with a muddy coop and run

Gardening for chickens

BYC Lists of Chicken Ailments and Cures

You can find articles by clicking on the menu bar with that name, or by using the search bar, with a little trick:

A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!

B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.

C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!

Best wishes from New England!
