cocci again and this time I mean buisness! need non-organic advise

thank you for the link I just ordered everything I could think of express mail. Hopefully it will get here tomorrow but I doubt it.
In the meantime I just got off the phone with the feed store again and after serching they said they have something that claims it works for cocci so I am going to get it in the afternoon when ds in in pre-school.

The way I am looking at it is that my hens that have been raised organically only and are for egg production I will continue using organic methods, but for any chook that is not being used as an organic egg producer (like my new SG, silkies and Araucanas which will be for hatching and breeding will be switched or raised using what you all think is best since I never bothered to research non organic methods before. Probably purina starter medicated and then purina layer I guess. It will certainly save me money. Now if I can only save my chicks I will be ok.

I really dont get this none of these chicks have ever been outside and if you saw how clean I keep things... well lets just say I have not showered in 3 days

but all of my brooders, waterers, and my ds are clean as a wistle all the time, I would even drink out of all of my waterers that is how clean they are.

I read somewhere that sunlight is important and although my brooder is right onder a window they dont get much sun. So I put my grow lights (sorry eggplants) over them to give them some extra artificial sun light.

If they were kept too "clean" they may have not developed proper immunities when they were young, so just a few cocci oocysts could have overwhelmed them. However, without any outside contact they may have something else going on.

Since cocci is in the area, you can still be organic if you get the vaccine for it. But it is no guarantee if there is a lot in their environment.

Does it really hurt them as far as being organic if they need meds for a while? I think I would prefer a healthy bird that was treated at one point for an illness it had than a bird not treated with something strong enough to kill the illness in the bird. After 30 days we can eat eggs again so don't they get a time out then they can be organic??

sorry for this rough time you are having it stinks!

well I am continuing treatment with my organic mix but have now gotten medicated blue seal starter so I am using that in the mix instead. In addition I have meds on the way. I started treatment yesterday (with the natural food mix) although I did not post until today and finally I am seeing some normal poops again and only 1/3 seem to not be perking up. All the ones I did not see eating I hand fed just to get it in their systems. Maybe with a little luck, and both the medicated starter and food mix I will be half way over this by the time the meds do arrive.

hopefully

Sounds like you have a plan, chick, so let's hope your meds come soon. While I dislike the idea of antobiotics, etc., Amprolium/Corid/Amprol is simply a thiamine blocker - - coccidia need vitamins to grow, and thiamine blockers simply prevent the uptake of the B vitamin, thus killing the cocci in around 3 days. While it can be effective, I don't consider this a hard-core medication that leaves a residue.

That said, I am not a vet, just a consumer. There's plenty of readin' out there for the OCD folks, LOL!

Do keep us posted. Sounds like your babies are having a nasty time of it.

BTW, if you got your meds from First State, there should be dosage instructions on the label. If not, post here and there are plenty of us who can look up the dosage from our own charts.

oh and OCD is not the word for it I an certifiable!

I hope they continue to improve. Best to knock it out as soon as possible, for reoccurring cocci is not good and can damage their intestines perminantly. If the Amprol doesnt work, I would switch to sulmet or sulmethadioxine for the thorough prescribed days. Remember to feed grit to help 'wash' their intestines. That Oregano sounds interesting. I need to check into that.

I dont think you have done anything 'wrong'. It sounds like you have been very diligent.

Something I heard a while back: Someone said to immunize against cocci is put an old hens poop in the chicks water and let them drink it. I have 4 chicks which I experimentally hatched and am trying this method on them. It makes sense, I mean when hens raise their chicks, they dont get cocci, and they are definitely around poo. So far at 1 month no cocci.
