I lost a 2 week old chick yesterday. When watching the remaining 16 chicks in the brooder I noted what looked like a blood soaked shaving.

Today I saw lots of bloody stools in the brooder.

I believe we have Cocci, though they were vaccinated. Should I treat with Corid?

I only feed unmedicated.

They’re being brooded in the coop where we have other chicks ranging from 3-6 months, should I treat the whole flock?
If they are still separated with different water you may not have to. But treating the whole flock will not hurt them. Just be sure not to supplement vitamins during treatment as the Corid mimics thiamine to starve out and slow the growth of the coccidia.

Thank you for your quick responses.

Yes, separate fresh water several times a day.

All other members of the flock are free ranging, I expect they have an immunity to it.

Here is the dosing chart for Corid, use the severe outbreak dosing: medicated water must be the only water they have access to during treament.
You can also give any that are having symptoms a direct oral dose in addition to the medicated water below,
Oral Drench instructions:
Corid 9.6% liquid - Do not dilute

  • Give 0.1 ml per pound of body weight orally once a day for 1-3 days.
or
  • 0.02 ml per 100 grams of body weight orally once a day for 1-3 days.

Corid 20% powder - Mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 2 teaspoons water.
  • Give 0.34 ml per pound of body weight orally once a day for 1-3 days.
or
  • 0.07 ml per 100 grams of body weight orally once a day for 1-3 days.
