We are pretty sure Daryl has coccidia after taking him to the vet was not confirmed because I didn't have a sample but he displayed all the symptoms. After a evening of giving him meds (albon). The next morning he was back to eating like a pig. The vet had also suggested to keep on giving him the chick boost probiotics. So I started them about a day later and now he is back to not wanting to eat much and water for poop and very little poo in it. I did see one little spot on paper towel that looked red like maybe blood. After doing some research my understanding is vitamin b and thiamine feeds coccidia and also high protein????? Can anyone confirm this? The probiotics have vitamins b, niacin and thiamine hydrochloride in them and the chick start I bought is 20%protein. Could this have allowed the coccidia to go rampid again although he's on meds? I'm going to stop the chick boost but the vet is unable to see me and waiting for him to at least give me a call in the meantime I thought I would ask for your thoughts????

Does sound like coccidiosis. You need to administer this. @Eggcessive or @Wyorp Rock can help you with a correct dosage. Corid can be be bought in either a liquid or powder at a Tractor Supply.

How long has Daryl been on the Albon? Albon is a sulfa antibiotic and different than Corid in it’s course of action. With Corid we don’t give extra vitamin B1 thiamine, since it works by mimicing thiamine. But Albon (sulfadimethoxine) works differently, and giving thiamine does not have any effect. Neither would giving him the high protein chicken food.

When they are treated for coccidiosis, they can still be sick for awhile. Giving us more details about how long it has been since he became sick, and if you are still using the Albon would help. Any other info about Daryl—how old he is, what the weather condtions have been, what his poops look like—would be helpful too.

Can you please post some photos of Daryl and his poop?
What state do you live in?

What are you feeding Daryl? Have you checked to make sure his crop is empty in the morning before he eats/drinks?
How old is Daryl?

You can use this image for Corid dosage when posting if you like. I believe it may have originally come from @casportpony but I cannot be sure  We all seem to use it in various forms (sorry Kathy!). If I type it all out, I have to double check my notes to make sure I'm giving the correct dosage, my brain is getting mushy:p

@Wyorp Rock & the others are right about the Corid (amprolium.) It seems the best med for Coccidiosis, but you must give it for the full course (5-7 days.) Do NOT give anything with B vitamins in it to your chick, as that will cancel out the effects of the Corid. Coccidiosis feeds off the vitamins, so you don't want to feed the bear! Once the Corid course is completed, though, IMMEDIATELY start your chick on a complete vitamin complex that includes the B's, or you may lose him to a nutrient "crash."
Coccidiosis is a nasty little bugger, so stay on it, but it is quite often survivable. Good Luck ... and keep us posted.

Do you have more Albon?

That is a chart that someone made for me and I gave them the wrong information.
This is what the mfg and the FDA recommend:
corid dose_1.png

When treating a bird for coccidiosis one can give an oral drench in addition to their medicated water. Here are the instructions:

Corid 9.6% liquid - Do not dilute
  • Give 0.1 ml per pound of body weight orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.
or
  • 0.02 ml per 100 grams of body weight orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.

Corid 20% powder - Mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 2 teaspoons water.
  • Give 0.34 ml per pound of body weight orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.
or
  • 0.07 ml per 100 grams of body weight orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.

The directions above are the same when using any 9.6% liquid or 20% powder. Such products include Amprol, AmproMed, Amprolium 200, Amprid, CocciAid, etc.

And the good news is... if your little one is suffering from coccidiosis, that their immune system will harden up against it, making occurrences less likely, and less severe as the bird ages; typically only flaring up again if it encounters a different strain or if they are immunodeficient due to another, unrelated illness. Cocci is literally everywhere and globally. It's in the dirt, in the coop, in their poop, in the poop of wild birds that drop a load while flying overhead, etc. Fortunately, treating it is relatively painless and won't hurt them to prophylactically treat for it a couple times a year just to be sure that they're not being overloaded by it.
