Coccidiosis or Something Else?

Morning all,

I have just gone to take my daily pictures of the chicks, top up their food and water and I've noticed blood on the woodchips. I didn't see the stool itself but there were a number of chips with blood on. We checked the chicks over and there are no outward signs of injury so the next logical conclusion was it's in a stool.

This is the first batch of chicks I haven't religious done the garlic, acv and honey concoction. In fact I did the first day and that was it, I'm not sure even why. I feel so guilty.

I've ordered corrid though I thought I'd already had this but it will arrive tomorrow. I do have a gut probiotic should I use this?

I have made up the water concoction, should I add oregano?

Is there anything else I can do?

The chicks themselves seem absolutely fine I've watch them savagely eat like normal and drinking as normal. Running around like loons bless them. I'm kicking myself, these have been my favourite chicks they are just a joy

How old are the chicks? Have they been on soil yet? These two factors are usually involved, chicks under a week being unlikely to have coccidiosis and those still inside in a brooder are unlikely to have been exposed., not to say it's not possible to bring in contaminants.

Garlic and oregano will not prevent coccidiosis, so this isn't due to forgetting to juice up their water. It just happens. Since the chicks seem fine, you have time to wait for the Corid to arrive, but definitely give them the treatment as prescribed.

They haven't been outside yet. Normally we would have by now but the weather has be dreadful. They are nearly 5 weeks. We always wash our hands before we handle them, I clean them out every two days and wash their feeder and waterer.

Do you have any idea what else it could be if it isn't coccidiosis? Will it be a safe bet for me to treat for this just in case?

I've just cleaned them out again and disinfected their brooder. It wasn't poop so much as some bloodied woodchip but I found the patch where they must have been. I'm pretty freaked out by the underside of the puppy pad, we've never had it look like this before.

I've also included a photo of the poop on the heated plate though it's not bloody @Wyorp Rock could it be some other cause do you think?

While they waited for the brooder to be cleaned the two SS's pooped and this appeared normal. The Buff Orp didn't poop.

The water in the brooder is going faster than it normally does when we've had other chicks in there. I'm not sure if that's significant.

Are they too hot?

I see possibly a bit of intestinal shedding in the poop.

How long to get the Corid?
You are in England, so likely your pet shop or feed store carries Harker's Coxoid which is Amprolium. Same thing as Corid. Dosing for the Harker's is on the bottle.

Thank you but I couldn't find anything yesterday, our petshops mainly deal in cats and dogs even the place I purchased my budgies from didn't have any treatments for birds! That's why have a a bunch of first aid stuff for them but I'm so cross with myself, Harkers do a product for worms and I've accidently order 2 of these instead of the coxiid and a work one.

It's actually the Harkers that I've bought, it was the one that would come fastest.

How long to I give this to them?

I forgot to add I've checked their brooder and no more bad looking poops, all normal, no blood, no waterer ones yet.

They are just adorable, they are acting normally. I wet my finger in water and then in a little bowl of chick crumb and the go mad for it and they are still doing this today thank goodness.

I've always enjoyed having the chicks we've had but strangely these I am way for attached to.

Directions and dosing are your bottle, but I believe it's 7 days for Coxoid.

It's good that you aren't seeing any more questionable poops, but I would treat them when you get the meds. Coccidia can damage the intestines, so getting them under control is a good idea.

I'm glad you are enjoying them chicks are a lot of fun.
