Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

Pics
I'm sorry I can't help you with the mottled color, but I do understand bbs.

It is one gene, (B), not three colors that get you blue, black or splash. It is the combination of the blue gene (B) or the lack of the blue gene that gives you the three colors.

Splash has two copies of the blue gene, one from each parent. Splash is BB.

A blue bird has just one copy of the blue gene, expressed as Bb.

Blacks have no Blue genes, and they are shown as bb.
Thank you, but I understand BBS, I breed BBS ameraucanas, it was just simplier to type it out that way
Preferable to breed Mottled to Mottled.

If you chose to breed Mottled to Black you would then breed the offspring back to the Mottled parent or to other siblings and you would get a percentage of Mottled chicks. Only go out to the Black 1 time. Personally I would only use Black if it is a much better type bird than the Mottleds to improve them.
Thank you, thats was what I was looking for

Oh my! I just found this thread! I had no idea!! So please, please tell me, does anyone have any calico frizzle cochin hens to sell? Or 1 calico and 1 mottled black and white pullets or chicks? These are now tops on my list! I do not show or breed, so if ya have any not up to standard, They'd be perfect for me.

I have a white Frizzle Bantam Cochin hen, but I don't have any chicks from her yet. I'm working on it, but I need a Bantam Cochin roo. My flock roo is half GLW and half white Leghorn.
If that's alright with you, maybe we could talk about hatching eggs from her.

I wonder what chicks would look like? White? Frizzled? I only have room for a couple more, and I'm certain it has to be frizzles, but color will be more flexible. When would you hatch them?

Wonder if someone could tell me the diff between calico and mille fleur. From the pics I'm not sure which is which.

Here's a pic of her yesterday:

This is her when she was feathering out.

I think white (no color) is dominant or co-dominant, meaning that her chicks would be white or a light version of their sire. She needs to be mated to a smooth roo to have frizzled babies; if she's mated to a frizzled roo, they'd be frazzled (frizzled with split ends, kind of). I'll start hatching in Jan/Feb. I think 1/4 of her chicks can be expected to be frizzled, but my roo is LF, so the sizes will be anywhere from as small as her to as large as him (think white Leghorn size).

I'm working on getting a better picture of her. She's so white that even on overcast days there's too much glare (as you can see in the top pic).

There is a very knowledgeable member on the Heritage Large Fowl thread. You might ask these genetics questions there. Cochin is not only a heritage breed, but some consider it a foundational breed b/c so many of the current heritage breeds are from it.

The are not many correct Mille Fleur Cochins. Calicos are the result of attempted Mille breedings that fell short in my opinion. Usually too much white on them. Both look beautiful running around the yard. There is no defined and recognized pattern for Calico.
