Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

I ordered him from ideal poultry hatchery. I always thought he looked frazzle too. The hatchery assured me he was a frizzle.

Whats a Frazzle? I assume it is a Frizzle to Frizzle bred bird? Is this not good?
If I bred Frizzle to regular Cochin what would I likely get percentage wise?
Is the Frazzle better to breed to, to a non Frizzle?

A frazzle carries two copies of the frizzling gene. They have weak, narrow feathers that often disintegrate. They are hard to keep alive because they have so much trouble with the cold. I have two that spent the winter in my house, one in the kitchen laying eggs and the other crowing in the bird room, waking up the house every morning well before we would normally get up.

A frazzle (FF) bred to a smooth (ff) produces 100% frizzles (Ff). There are modifier genes involved with the frizzle gene that can surpress its expression.

In a breeder's hands, a frazzle is a handy bird to have since you can get 100% proper frizzles in a hatch. I'll be breeding (by AI) my frazzle pullet to my show quality cockerel, to get 100% proper frizzles.

They don't live long, though. Trying to keep them well is a real pain and I would never have one again. My two came to me as frizzle chicks. I think it is just awful that the hatcheries are putting together frizzle to frizzle pens. I know they are because they advertise their chicks will be 75% frizzle and 25% smooth. The only way you can get that ratio is to be breeding frizzle to frizzle.

Ff (frizzle) x Ff (frizzloe) gives:
1 FF (Frazzle)
2 Ff (proper frizzle)
1 ff (smooth)

The hatcheries are classifying the frazzles as frizzles, which is technically correct, but I don't think any unsuspecting buyer even knows what a frazzle is and are unprepared for what they get.

Sorry, forgot to answer your last two questions:

Normal frizzle to smooth gives half normal frizzle and half smooth. Again, there are modifiers to the frizzle gene so a bird that appears smooth might in fact be genetically frizzled.

Ff (frizzle) x ff (smooth) gives:
50% Ff (normal frizzle)
50% ff (smooth)

Always breed a frazzle to a smooth, otherwise half the birds are frazzle and half proper frizzle. Frazzle is a real challenge to keep alive and healthy.
