Cochin Thread!!!

Mr Ree are you going to be at any shows in or near Wisconsin. Like in Iowa or Hutchinson MN? I am interested in a pair of white cochins. I tried writing a pm but there seems to be something a little off with my computer tonight. Thanks

Danny that Buff Barred cockerel is adorable

when u say feet, are you talking shanks? Or the bottom of feet? I have one that has dark shanks but is light yellow under feet...is that a miscoloration for them on legs? I'm very new to cochins and can't find a show near me...I'm near Dallas.

Bottoms yellow for all varieties. Many varieties yellow for shanks also. For Blacks, Blues, ect as dusky yellow is allowed. Not greenish ever. What variety is your bird? A hen that has laid hard or is getting old probably/may loose her bright yellow and look a very pale yellow. That is OK also. The following is the leg foot color disqualification: Bottoms of feet showing complete absence of yellow in all varieties. The actual leg colors are listed with each variety description in the Standards.

Danny,

Love the Buff Barred Frizzle. I'm working on that color (not frizzle) too. This boy has good type, I now need to clean up the black barring.

My cochin pullets are 17 weeks now. How soon should I be getting eggs from them? I noticed today that a few of my teenage pullets (various breeds) are starting to get the redder combs starting up. I know that is a sign of impending laying. I'm hoping to see some eggs from them all soon. Also what color egg should I expect? I know they lay brown but how light or dark are we talking? The only other brown egg layers that I have currently laying are production reds.

You should get eggs from them between now and 24 weeks. I have one pullet that I just sold who is 16 weeks and is already starting to squat when you pick her up so I would say they can start at around 18 weeks and up. They lay a brown egg that is large the ones that I have lay a medium brown egg. Not as dark as a production red but darker than a white egg. You will be able to tell the difference.

Thank you for your response.

I'd read that the cochins take a little longer to lay sometimes. I only just noticed the redness starting to show up today. Guess I'm just in the waiting game now!

So this afternoon my daughter went out to see if our Cochin, Cinnamon had laid and egg for us, sure enough she did. Jocelyn then proceeded to reach in and take the egg, Cinnamon, whom has never had a mean bone in her body, went after her hand and then sat on the egg. She is still there sitting on the egg. Does this mean she is broody? And if so do they know for sure if an egg is fertilized? I've seen my Silkie mount her quiet a few times but He is very much a klutz when it comes to it. LOL
