Cochin Thread!!!

Hello everyone! I have a question for the experts! My little banty Cochin Pidge is 29 weeks and no eggs yet. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Do you think she will lay soon or wait for more light? I would love for her to start laying because I am really hoping she will go broody within a few months of starting. :D And I kinda worry about developing girly issues as time goes by.

What kind of girly issues are you thinking of?

Just that she'd get egg bound or something from waiting so long. I know it's not likely to happen but I worry anyway.
The 8 month and 7 month old cochin pullets I purchased last month haven't laid a single egg, but I'm not worried. I'm actually glad they don't lay now because then in the Spring when I actually want to hatch, they will be able to start up well without being tired from laying over the winter. It seems to differ for everyone depending on your birds and where you live/how much light they get but for me cochins have never laid in the winter unless I have a light on a lot.

Ok, I just wasn't sure. My EE gals started laying the first week of January so I didn't know if Pidge would be similar or would wait for more light. We are having a very mild winter up here. I think I have had to de-ice the waterers four or five times in the last month. Last year I was melting the ice in the waterers every day by this point.

It's always a little surprising when breeding from my Mille Fleur project pens. At the end of the last season I had a few blue half grown birds in with the MFs and of course there were a few later hatches. Most of them were not too interesting, but I did get about a half dozen of pullets colored like this: Most are just like this one, but a few are a little lighter in color. The underdown and columbian markings are blue with the rest a shafted white laced buff like color. As they were from my wheaten based MF hens, I'm thinking they look like maybe blue wheaten? Any other guesses/thoughts? They are about 5-6 months old. Dave

What an interesting pattern and color combo!! I look forward to hearing from some of the genetic experts.

This color is very striking! I love the color and pattern combo! She is a beauty.

My Blue Mottled girl went thru a tough molt and now has a lot bigger white spots.
I have one that just went through a very tough molt and she has so much white in her now. She is still feathering out and I will get pictures when she looks a bit better. I have never had one go through such a tough molt before. She hardly had any feathers in places!
