Cochin Thread!!!

Got a few pics of a few this years birds, the frizzle trio I am keeping for breeding and one of the Red pullets that I will be using for my breeding project. Her and another pullet will be the foundation of my Red breeding project, type isnt good but color is very there. Hope you all enjoy. The frizzles are kept on wire and let out daily. They had just finished dust bathing and the wind was crazy, so they dont look the best but you get the idea. They were also taken with a cell phone, so quality isnt great.

These two are the same pullet, not as clean and nice looking as she could be but, im not concerned with that until showing season.

Cant see the frizzle in the back well, but you can see she has a nice head as well. Her feathering is a little better than the above pullet as well, a little crisper and wider. Again, they are dirty but you can still see their type.

Like the way the cockerel is turning out. He also looks to have a decent head. Not sure why his beak turned out so washed out looking in this photo.

Could I ask for everyone's opinion?
I want to order some hatching eggs sometime in early 2013 and I want to get GOOD eggs. My birds will mainly be pets but I'd like to have some good enough to take to shows and some that are good enough to do well at shows. I've been poking around on the Cochins International website but how do I know who is the best of the best?

I am very new to Cochins and have no clue on who to go to first.
I definitely want some columbians and splash. Maybe blue and black...or even buff. I can't decide, watch me end up with one of each color..

Could anyone advice me on who are the best breeders around?
Any other advice for a first time Cochin egg buyer would be very much appreciated. I've had my silkies for a few year now, time to expand.

getting 'good eggs' is dependent on a lot of things, including how they're handled by USPS during shipping... and anyone that sells 'show quality' eggs may have good birds, but there's no guarantee that even show quality birds will hatch show quality chicks...

my suggestion is, if you haven't hatched much before, buy already hatched chicks. you'll save yourself a lot of time and effort and money over so many dozens of eggs with only a few chicks to show for it.

Thank you. I am really happy with what I ended up with this year. I dont have a lot of room so I am keeping a trio of each, frizzle and smooth to breed from and show in 2013. Still need to work on a couple things, but I am happy with them just 2 years into breeding birds again. Hope to have some Reds like my Whites in a few years, and also some Buff.

I have some really nice Splash (bantams) but I rarely sell eggs. I sell started birds in late Spring. There is no such thing as "SQ" eggs. If you want to be sure you are getting good quality show birds, buy started birds (at least 3 months old, not baby chicks). There is no way to tell the quality of a chick. Craig Hansen has really good Columbians and Tom Roebuck has the best Buffs. Gaetano Farm, Jamie Matts, and Tonea Scarbrough have excellent Blues.

Hey! As Ki4got said, two show quality birds will not always produce show quality chicks.
There seem to be fantastic breeders who regularly produce great birds, but those often seem to be a small percentage from a large hatch. So, your best bet would be to buy chicks if you can, from a reliable breeder. There have been many mentioned on this thread who are associated with good quality birds.

There was a list provided in this thread of various breeders and the points they had won various shows, this could be a good start. I will try and post it if i can find it again. Even from all the way over here in South Africa i can see a few very good breeders, by the various show results, and peoples opinions on them in this and other forums.

Also, you need to decide exactly what you want in terms of colour, as different people specialise in different colours. Once you know the colour you want people will find it easier to point you in the right direction

Hope that helps. Andy

Good luck:)

I'm loving the Frizzle's... I know I've shared pics of mine, but here are some recent ones:
400

400

She will be 1 in the middle of February, and it feels like she was just a tiny chick yesterday.

Quoting myself, haha. If I wanted to breed blues, would I breed her to a black? I really want blue Frizzle's. She would be founding hen of any Frizzle lines I start.
