Cochin Thread!!!

Quoting myself, haha. If I wanted to breed blues, would I breed her to a black? I really want blue Frizzle's. She would be founding hen of any Frizzle lines I start.

Black and White wont necessarily just give you Blue. It will most likely give you just that, Black and White. You would need to have a Blue, Splash or Black to start with. I am no genetics expert, but pretty sure you wont get Blue from that cross, and if so genetically they wont be Blue? I really dont know, but I dont think you can get Blue from a White mated to Black.

Ok, thank you. What are some colors I can cross her with and that the offspring would be reconized by the SOP?

I've been thinking about breeding the " blue wheaten" pullets from my accidental wheaten based MF pen. I also got a few splash cockerels that have both black and some have blue columbian markings like this There are some with better combs than this one! I guessing/wondering if I'll lose the lace pattern or not. Use the blue marked or black marked? Thoughts?

getting 'good eggs' is dependent on a lot of things, including how they're handled by USPS during shipping... and anyone that sells 'show quality' eggs may have good birds, but there's no guarantee that even show quality birds will hatch show quality chicks...

my suggestion is, if you haven't hatched much before, buy already hatched chicks. you'll save yourself a lot of time and effort and money over so many dozens of eggs with only a few chicks to show for it.

Hey! As Ki4got said, two show quality birds will not always produce show quality chicks.
There seem to be fantastic breeders who regularly produce great birds, but those often seem to be a small percentage from a large hatch. So, your best bet would be to buy chicks if you can, from a reliable breeder. There have been many mentioned on this thread who are associated with good quality birds.

There was a list provided in this thread of various breeders and the points they had won various shows, this could be a good start. I will try and post it if i can find it again. Even from all the way over here in South Africa i can see a few very good breeders, by the various show results, and peoples opinions on them in this and other forums.

Also, you need to decide exactly what you want in terms of colour, as different people specialise in different colours. Once you know the colour you want people will find it easier to point you in the right direction

Hope that helps. Andy

Good luck:)

Thanks guys!
I contacted a few breeders I found on the Cochin International website. Several of them do not ship eggs, as they hatch for theirselves. But I'll still keep looking just incase I find someone that does!

I do understand that you won't always get a show quality chick out of an egg that came out of show quality birds. That's not a problem. I've hatched Silkie eggs 4 times now. I've used my hens and an incubator, both. I know that's not a ton of experience, but I would feel confident enough to spend some money on eggs and hatching them myself. And even if I didn't get any show or breeding worthy birds, I would keep most of them for pets.

I think I will try my luck at some of the shows, if I can find any close by. I hear there is a show in Springfield, MA in January. I'll take a trip there and see if I can find a nice breeding pair and hatch my own eggs just for fun and as a learning experience.

She is white... Normally, I would stick with white, but it's super hard to keep clean, especially with Cochins.

That is something I do not have problems with. My White birds get outside time, they take dust baths, and act like chickens, but I do not have a big problem cleaning them or keeping them clean. I have had birds sit and roll in red clay soil, get up shake off and look as if it did before it rolled in it. They do get dirty, dont get me wrong, but I have never had issues with stains in the feathers from dirt, etc. The only time I really do have any issues with it, is if the birds are wet or if they get wet while doing it.

Ok, I have a very newbie question about cochins. Are they a full term egg hatch or do they tend to hatch early? At 99+ what will they do? First time cochin owner/hatcher and just wondering as I have 4 in lock down at 99.5 degrees. They are 19 days today. Should I be watching them tomorrow, or do you think they will go to Saturday?

Thanks for any/all advice. And please don't thump me for asking.
