Cochin Thread!!!

Yup, I'd jump all over this.

for what she is, i'd grab her... like craig said, you have to start somewhere.

i have a cockerel with similar type, and a pair i picked up (supposedly the pair i stupidly sold last year) but now that her feathers are growing back out, i seriously doubt she's the same hen... this one's worse than most hatcheries even produce IMO. (mine not your girl). but i'm hoping of the 7 silver laced and 4 silver/gold laced (cross because she didn't have a roo) chicks i hatched out last week, i'll have a decent assortment to work with for both silver and gold.

the roos will be heterozygous silver, but should produce some non-silver hens, so we'll see where it goes from there.

that pair i picked up are headed to the next swap. the roo's the first nasty cochin roo i've ever met too (for sale for meat price at best, free at worst. i want him GONE!) so i KNOW he wasn't one of mine. LOL besides the fact that type doesn't change THAT much in a year - from both having 'ok' cushions and wing sets, to straight tails, no cushion at all hardly, and drooping wings. but they'd been crammed in with some larger birds and plucked pretty hard, so i had to take the chance... right?

nice lacing. Not many good ones so you probably should try it. Type does need to be improved but you have to start somewhere. At least she has lacing.

Thanks everyone! I will see if she's still available.

I need to get pics, but I finally have myself a start on my black bantam Cochins! I bought a pair off of Jamie Matts yesterday at the York show. I also bought 2 other girls from another guy outside. The one isn't as wide as I would have liked, but hopefully she's young and will widen. They two gave me each an egg yesterday after we got home and they look like pullet eggs.

I'll get pics once things get settled down around here.

The cockerel has a case of pneumonia from the trip. He's on day 2 of treatment. I sure hope he pulls through.

Are these mystery babies of my Cochin Mixes? They are now 3 weeks old, and I got them from a lady who hatched them for a Preschool, she had no idea what they are, she was given the eggs by a parent, and they never told her. I think one might be a Bantam, because its just not growing, My chicks that are a week younger are double the size. All have feathered legs

Chick #1, Possible Bantam, heavy feathered on legs, and has the most feathers of the bunch

Chick #2, Possible Roo, Comb is getting redder everyday.

Chick #3

Chick #4 No tail feathers at 3 weeks

Chick #4
Anyone know if these guys are Cochin Mixes? Just trying to figure out what they might be.

Thanks

Hi all, i would really like some opinions on these birds, they were sold to me as standard Cochin, I realise they are not ideal for their type and thats ok as i am not using them to breed show birds but i am getting the feeling they may not be true Cochin, especially the older 2. They are going to big, the pullet in the second pic is about the same size as my australorp hen and the roo is bigger, they are both approx 18 weeks, the 2 smaller ones are approx 8 weeks.
Splash Roo 18 weeks
Pullet 18 weeks
Buff pullet 8 weeks
Blue pullet 8weeks
Thanks for taking a look and please let me know what you think :)

What do you guys think about this hen? I found her on craigslist and I'd like to buy her for my project, but I'm not sure of her quality. I know that she doesn't have the best type based off of what I've seen on here, but how bad is she? Is she worth breeding?
I would be all over that!! Go get her! I am just starting my SL project and I have about 6 babies n the ground now with about another 6 eggs in the bator. I have to stay small so not sure how many more I will hatch this year. But I am having such a blast with them. So excited about this variety!!

It seems like they are all mixes, except for maybe the 8 week old buff pullet. Standard=Large Fowl so yes they are going to be big. When I say mixes, that could also mean mixes of the different varieties. Like you said you are not showing, they will make beautiful eye candy for your yard!
