Cochin Thread!!!

???? For some reason it's not adding those first photos of the very light blue/splash bird, however if you follow this back it is the post I was referring to. Hope that clears up my comment. If I was referring to the wrong bird.....sorry.
I gotcha! Thats what I was trying to say too. It didn't add the pictures for me either so I thought u were actually sayin mine were the light blue/splash. It clears it up, no worries..lol!!

I hatch eight LF Cochins five days ago. I'm very excited about getting started with this breed. The chicks are adorable. May I ask what you look for in chicks to meet breed standard? How soon can you tell if a chick has the correct basic markers for the breed? Also, how soon can you tell what color they will be? I have four different colors (at least I think they're different) and they were a mix of black, blue, splash, and white. I got the eggs from a reputable local breeder and although I did not have as many hatch as I was hoping, I'm pretty happy with the ones I have. :D

. Can't see it in the pic but this chick has a beautiful round fluffy butt. The tail dried out first and was almost wider than the chick.

. The darkest and most feisty of the chicks

Thanks for looking. Any help with questions is greatly appreciated. :)

I've thought this was a cockerel since he was about a week old. His comb and wattles haven't grown in a couple of weeks, and now I'm beginning to question gender. This is my first Cochin. Thanks for helping! He? is about 12 weeks old now.

Here are my 5 week old Bantams. I'm not sure about the colors of the black one and the two on the outside yet! And it looks like I have one roo..

The two brown ones look like partridge cockerels, the buff colour with dark colouring around the neck in the last image also looks like it may be a cockerel i am afraid to say(hard to tell for me though)

Having said that, they all look to be offspring with a partridge, the buff from a columbian X partridge. They look lovely though. Congrats

more picture of the saddle feathers would help. but from that i would guess cockerel
I am going to look this afternoon at saddle feathers. I am at work and a friend saw that pic and questioned whether it was a cockerel. That got me thinking. Especially since his comb hasn't gotten any bigger since he was about 5-6 weeks old.

I have some week old Cochin's, 5 straight run silver laced and 2 blue hens, they are only about a week old now but I can't wait to see if my silver laced are boys or girls! Anyone know the age I should be able to start looking for signs? And what those signs would be?? These are my first Cochins so I am a newbie at this :)

Here are my older 2 banty cochins, same age (give or take a day or 2). White one's HUGE and black frizzle's really small. Someone said the frizzles are slow to grow, is this true? Or should I be concerned?

These are new ones I just picked up: 2 black splash, 1 blue splash. Bantam trio.

And standard sized blue & gold laced pullets:
