Cochin Thread!!!

Hi folks. Any thoughts on the color pattern type on these Cochins. They were straight run from ideal.

Shouldn't be a mix as they are theoretically purebreds from ideal. Some are suggesting birchen. Thanks though. I'm enjoying them.

Bottom is partridge.

The top looks like a cross, very similar in fact to some crosses i did. I would say the two culprits are black and partridge for the top one. Sorry, to clarify further, a mix of colours, not different species. Can you get a pic from the front, and from the back?

See here for my cross to black, the pattern shows in juvenile feathers, then gets covered over. The pullets below is from a cross to partridge, and shows the same pattern leakage maybe? note the gold leakage here.

One more thing to look for, the boy in the first pic seems to have a pure white tail, if so may be mottled, look at the chest and "butt" as he grows, here are some tell tale signs.

pure white rear.

white feathers coming in off the chest

Hard to guess though based on only picture though

I think type is certainly acceptable for a Cochin. Not nearly as typey as a Black but for their age there is adequate width and cushion. I think I will know which birds will not make it after molts and those will probably be culled unless they are loaded with type. The rest will just be wait and see. I love the challenge of a patterned bird but sometimes have to remind myself just how slowly they develop.

I fully understand, my partridge cockerel looked pretty terrible until about 6 months. i have seen a lot of postings elsewhere where people say with patterned birds wait at least until the first year moult, and some even saying 2nd year moult. That is a long time and a lot of food to invest into birds if you are unsure how they will turn out.

Did you hatch any columbians this season? i am really really struggling to find some here. All the pullets i have seen are very pale in the neck and saddle. I would love to see what yours look like at a few months old, so i could get an idea of what they are meant to look like if you dont mind posting a picture or two.

Hi there,

I'm looking for a Cochin breeder in Missouri, and one very helpful

member of this thread recommended Annamay Carlson as a breeder. I just wondered if anyone has had experience with her birds? I have also contaced Phyllis Sinn. Has anyone heard of her?

Thanks so much!

I would definitely recommend either Annamay Carlson or Bernita Miller. It all depends on what you are looking for. Bernita is the District Director for Cochins International, and may be able to help you locate stock in the area if she or Annamay don't have what you are looking for. Annamay lives in Harrisonville; Bernita lives in Windsor.

(I have birds from both.)

I'm looking to buy chicks, and Ms. Miller only sells adult birds, but I haven't contacted Ms. Carlson yet. Do you know if she sells chicks?

Thanks again!
