Cochin Thread!!!

I got some better pics of my pair. Although they are hatchery, I like how they are turning out. Any thoughts? They are also starting to molt. They have feathering on all 4 toes. They are 6 months old. Large fowl.

I hope my hatchery chicks look that nice at 6 months! Where did you get yours?

I got them in the spring at Big R. I went in just to get some silver laced wyandotte pullets for eggs, as I had enough boys already. Then I saw a bin full of large fowl blue cochins, straight run of course lol. I got lucky and ended up with a pair. This is our first year with chickens. All of our silkies are SQ, and I am learing more and more about bird quality in general. So having pretty birds from a hatchery kind of surprised me.

I think Big R got their birds from Cackle Hatchery this year.

I'd say you came out very well with these birds. I don't know how well they would do in the shows, but they're certainly nothing to be embarrassed about. Very nice pair.

I agree with kabhyper1, looks like a pullet to me - small wattles compared to the two cockerels.

Oh thank you!! Apparently Cackle isn't doing too bad with their breeding, for a hatchery.

Maybe, I still think you were more lucky than anything else. I'd say if a person isn't looking to show or breed for exhibition they might do OK. I also think it varies from breed to breed and variety to variety.

Who knows! I feel fortunate that they turned out nice anyway it happened.

My 16wk old cockerel Cash crowed for the first time today. I'm very pleased with the sound...he has a deep baritone that rounds out at the end of the crow. One of the other Roos crowed as well but it couldn't tell which one it was...his was a little higher pitched and strained he sounded more like a turkey.

Any critiquing on Cash? I realize he's young but I have hopes for him. Beautiful yellow feet, nice green sheen, and a decent cushion when he's fluffed. I have ordered my standard but its yet to arrive. Please feel free to point out his failings so I can learn from them.
