So how do you know if you have melanizing?

Just when I think I'm beginning to grasp it, it all goes over my head...
But I know I have the partridge in there. This is one of my roos;

He might could pass for partridge but he's out of my Mille Fleur pen.

I'm a firm believer in using Mottling, some of my most valuable breeders this year look Mottled with leakage; they have the best type..
The pullet behind her is a first generation split.

for the milles that you do have, do you have any with much darker hackle markings than the others? that will be a melanized bird...

for example, Calico (lost last month) is melanized, while his son is not (even tho he's a much darker red)...

in hens, their hackles would also be much darker...

This is one of her sisters. How would you think she would do in a 4-H show? They are practically identical, but her foot feathering is really long. Her tail is also just a bit fluffier.
I have to say generally yes that bird will do well in a 4H show. I have seen birds that would do well at an open ABA-APA show be exhibited at some county fairs. You would never be embarrassed to exhibit a like that bird in 4H. My comments on shows is that you can never know if you have a winner because you never know what someone else will bring. I also know some 4H shows use judges of questionable experience level so whether you win or lose really doesn't matter a lot because YOU know what you have. Nice bird.

Nancy, I can't tell how much spangling he has, but he is gorgeous and I just wonder if he could work in a red program. He definitely has the mahogany color that I think the reds need. Have you ever thought of breeding Reds?

Beautiful birds!

A lot of my birds have darker hackles, even if they have no chevrons
Is this what you mean, though? To me it looks like Kiperu has darker hackles too? Just maybe not as much as Calico? I'm so Sorry about Calico

And so, I've had Freaky running around as a yard bird, but he definitely has the darker hackles. I had planned on pairing him up with a hen who looks wheaten with a little mottling when I found the time, now I think I'm going to make that a priority.. &/or should I try him with anyone else? One of the calico-looking girls maybe?

Nancy I had given serious thought to breeding Reds, I have a frizzle rooster who looks like a Black Tailed Red or something close to it
and his daughter is a Red
I tried to add stock earlier this year via shipped eggs, but I haven't had any luck with shipped eggs at all this year. Maybe I'll try again with live birds - I've always loved Joanie's Reds, and MO is just a state away ~

MO????

This little one is about a month old. It came from a mixed flock of seabrights,NN and partridge Cochin. I think it is purebred though with those feathered legs.
