Cochin Thread!!!

I have seen my cochin chicks play keep away with a piece of wood shaving in their brooder. One will grab it and run around while the other 4 chase him, then he will drop it and another will pick up a piece and they will chase her. They run in circles in the grow-out brooder until they just wear out. Its really cute to watch.

Still gender confused if anyone can help. The one I thought was a cockerel was singing the egg song this morning....

I know it is difficult because they are black....can anyone sex these for me? They are 6-7 months old.

Not seeing any v shaped feather tips, so may be pullets. Some males are slow to show pointed feathers until their last molt. You can check the hackle and saddle feathers as they are coming in to look for points. Pullets will have all round feather tips.

Do you ever see any of your birds "play"? This cockerel will take off running and jump around like a frog seemingly for no reason. The other day I could swear he was playing with my dog. The dog was running in big circles and every time he came around towards "Groucho", the bird hopped at him in a non-agressive way. Neither was acting threatened. I will have to get a video of this big guy acting so goofy. He is very friendly too, follows me around.
Mary Jo...Groucho is looking good. He is going to be a big boy!

Got some hay in the pen finally!!! The game bantams, silkies, Cochin bantams, quail, & the goose are all hayed down. I've another bale coming in sometime this week to give to the laying hens and rooster.

Do any of you not bother giving roosts to your bantam cochins? Mine are about 4 1/2 months old now, and they just pile into the corner under the hanging feeder every night. I have a "trainer" roost installed that is only about 10-12 inches above the bedding. I never had trouble getting my hatchery cochins to roost, but these better bred ones are stubborn! I really wish they wouldn't snuggle in the poopiness all night, since it inevitably gets gross there quickly.
