Cochin Thread!!!

I just talked to the poultry lab and they told me that they were carriers but not contageous and I don't totally understand that. The doctor also said mereks is everywhere and there are different strains some worse than others.

I'll go back into my documents and find the source for you. The vaccine doesn't prevent the birds from contracting Marek's...it simply prevents them from developing the tumors caused by the disease. Vaccinated birds do not shed the disease...only non-vaccinated Marek's infected birds shed it.

I agree with not totally "getting it" in regards to them being non-contagious carriers. I, personally, think it's one or the other...but I'm not a vet. I don't consider them carriers because they're vaccinated. But anyways...this topic is for another thread. There's plenty of Marek's threads here in BYC with lots of debates. Let's get back to Cochins.

I have babies hatching!!! There is a buff out of the shell, a birchen with a peep hole, a blue also with a peep hole and cheeps coming from another blue and possible a silver penciled. (There is also a white and possibly a lavender that were developing last I candled the eggs!)

There were 2 Brown Red eggs that were in the bunch that I ordered -- they were the whole reason I ordered at all, but they never developed (Bummer!!!)

Does anyone here have Brown Red (bantams) [or better still Lemon Blue that are Brown Red based] and have some eggs for sale???

I'll post pics of the new chicks once they've all hatched.

If you give chicks the vac you need to keep them away from all others that do not have the vac for 2 weeks, as the like said above the vac is a Live mereks strain, and will shed to chicks that are not vac for it. Just my 2 cents that i have learned.

Obviously, vaccinations are a matter of personal preference. For those wanting to read more in-depth, there is an excellent article in the 2010 ABA Yearbook, on pages 252>256. It was written by Cynthia Smith, DVM, and is titled "Vaccination for the Small Flock Owner". It covers the pros and cons, procedural issues, and addresses Marek's, Fowl Pox, and Laryngo-trancheitis.

I've appreciated all the discussion over vaccinations. I was beginning to conduct my own research to make a decision after my GLP cockerel that I had earmarked for keeping as my breeder began to show apparent Marek's symptoms. You all have saved me the trouble--I can just follow your links and info. Thanks!

Here is one piece of my research info. This is quoted from an email sent to me directly by Dr. Peter Brown. He had sent me this same info last year, but being the lazy person I am today and not wanting to dig that far back, I emailed him again this morning and asked him the same question as I had before...which is/was "Are Marek's vaccinated birds actual carriers of the disease?"
Dr. Brown's response:
"Vaccinated birds are not Carriers from the Vaccine. The Vaccine is not an
actual Mareks Virus but a Turkey Herpes Virus that protects against the
Mareks Virus."

And in Cynthia Smith's article that is mentioned by Coopa Cabana, I believe there's some VERY interesting info regarding turkeys and Marek's disease. Thanks for posting that link Coopa.
