Cochin Thread!!!

Hi cochin freinds!!!!
Some of you know the story of rainbow my rescued chicken! Well I got my first egg from her today!!!! It was tiny I took pics but once again can't get them to upload :( but anyway it was the size of a robin egg, maybe just a tad bit bigger. She is a standard size chicken, so I don't think she feels 100% better yet but she's getting there!!!!! Oh and I thought she was a game hen it was hard to tell from all her missing feathers but she is either a ameruacana, Easter egger or olive egger. Her tiny egg was a beautiful sage green color.

Oh boy if I was into LF Cochin's...
I was at a local flea market this morning and found a huge handsome and a good looking well kept red black rooster. He would have been a great addition to anyone wanting to work on lemon blues in standard size. He actually was put together nicely so a good project bird.
Well.....................
Tell us Mindy, where did he end up? Did you bring him home so someone on here could work with him?

Easter Egger and I don't know how eld she is, but pullets lay some very strange eggs when they first start out, sometimes they'll even lay an egg with no shell.

Yea idk how old she is. We will see how her eggs start to develop. Maybe she is just a youngster?

Do you know if this would be true of any chick that is partridge colored/marked? I have been getting some partridge marked chicks but I don't have any partridge marked adults.

The eye stripe can be used to sex any chick that is on what is called an Asiatic base(Eb) or a Wild Type (e+) base. Partridge are build on a base gene of Eb, and so can be sexed using this technique. It is harder with mille fluer, as people mix up the base genes and make chick down identification a bit more difficult.

Having said that. Partridge marked chicks can come from parents that dont look partridge, they may be what is called "split" on a base gene. It is hard to know what will come from a hatch unless you know the full history of your birds.

I did a lot of test breeding two years ago, and discovered all of my birds carried mottling, and even though none of them displayed mottles, i got mottled chicks out of them.

Hope that helps, if you have any more questions or want any more info then please ask away

If they look partridge, does that mean they have the Eb or e+ base? I don't know which hens laid which eggs so I don't know if they came from Heartland or not. My 2 roosters did. Most of my hens did but 3 of them did not, so I don't know their histories or even how to find out about them. If I could be sure about the mothers coming from Heartland, I could ask Alan but then again, he may not know.
