Cochin Thread!!!

still on the lookout for eggs to show up from my two LF pullets. combs are getting darker but no squatting yet..Stumpy is paying them more attention and grabs them by the comb when he is able to catch one if them.

@cabinchicky I know the feeling, my pullets are going on 8 months now and still no eggs, but they are darkening up a lot, and it looks like they've started squatting so hopefully it isn't long off. :fl

Yeah once the pullets start I hope to shame my 15 hens into laying again. My two are close to 8 months old as well and so close I can't wait.

Do LF Cochin chicks require the same temperatures as other chicks (95 degrees then 5 less per week) when young? Sorry if it's a bit silly to ask this :D
I personally haven't used a thermometer in a long time. I just go by behavior- loud chicks are hot or cold, and quiet chicks feel "just right" lol.

But to answer the question, I don't know of any special temp considerations for LF Cochins :)

Thanks, cause I've got someone holding five chicks for me until they're old enough to be left alone outside and they are getting impatient so I'm worried that they won't keep them for me much longer :/ they are going on four weeks now and our temperatures don't go below 65 at the moment, but during the day is staying around 85. Any advice? Can't really have a brooder unfortunately

Oh gosh with those temps and that age, they should be about good to go! I have two-week-olds outside right now with just a heat lamp at night.. Of course, we've been having unseasonably warm temps too but anyway.

My chicks are generally fairly feathered at a month old. If there are enough of them to pile up and keep warm as needed, you may get by with just a wind block of some sort (I have a cardboard box in w mine but they don't use it)

Thanks, it's summer here though, and this has been the coldest week since October, makes life so much easier with chicks. I guess I'll chance it and get them, just watch if they're ok. Thanks :D so excites now

(?) GIRL (?) With SUPER BIG WADDLES COMB ?? Could she be a girl still with these massive red waddles? I read a few other threads with similar questions and some turn out to be roos but some did turn out to be hens. What do you think? She has really pretty shiny black feathering thru out her entire body, no extra shiny tail feathers. She is HUGE, but that is the breed of course. I am sure she is not the best quality but I needed to remove her from her horrible home.

Her name is Black Betty and I rescued her from a horrible place/breeder where the "rats" took the to blue cochin I went to pick up when they were about 8 weeks old. Betty was the only one in the coop when we went in :( so she is ours always, but really would love a "little" pullet :)
thanks
