I have a favorite little black cochin roo. He is about 8 or 9 years old. I have ordered some pullets to put with him. I am biting my nails hoping my old fella doesn't die before I get them, and hoping that once I do he can get the job done and produce some chicks for me.

I am so sorry. A few years ago, if someone told me that i would ever weep over a chicken, I would have thought it was the silliest thing ever, but I have wept my share over loosing a chicken. Like any other pet, they have a way of commanding our affections.

Oh Twyla, I'm so sorry you lost your guy, I can only imagine how devastated you are. I've lost a few chickens in the past, but I have one who is my favorite and I can hardly think about what I'll do when he's gone. Lots of folks tell us to never get attached and have a favorite, but I think that is an impossible goal. For many of us....having the chickens is about sharing our love with another living being, and they give back so much. With out my birds, I would have a hard time finding a reason to get up and get going in the morning. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
