That's what I had read here on BYC so I looked high and low for one...now I have a beastie on my hands

My pets are always "lifers" so it's hard to just give him away. I don't want him mistreated...but I don't want chunks of flesh missing from my little girl either!! OK, I'm exaggerating. I'm glad that he doesn't have spurs though. Is that normal?

I am the proud Chicken momma to 14 baby cochin chicks! So being that they are all around 3-5 days old, I am noticing some little combs on about half...so would these be pullets or roos?
And also at what age to most Roo breeds start to show Spurs?
Thanks!!
I just love my fuzzy feet babies!

Most of the time the roos will show combs at a week or two old. If you are seeing little bumps on the combs it is a good indication of a roo but it could be a big combed girl. Though rare, I have had them to fool me.
In Cochins, my boys don't have much in the way of spurs until a year old. And they are always so covered I have to really hunt for them when I check every month for parasites and check weights.

Hi! No one responded in the behaviors and egg laying section so I'm re-posting here...

I got 3 little full sized partridge cochins this past Monday and they are completely adorable. -Although I strongly suspect one is a bantam roo even though I said I didn't want roosters or bantams, but oh well, I really don't mind. smile It's been 4 days now and they act like I'm going to murder them every time I get near. I've had to handle them a few times and they just SCREAM, not to mention trying their best to get away.

Now I totally understand it's a new place and I need to be patient and let them get used to me and the new surroundings but I would think by the 4th day they would at least be curious when I offer them a treat or something and not assume I'm going to do something terrible to them. I've spent lots of quiet time with them this week and brought many, many treats but they won't even look if I try to give them something nice to eat. I've only raised chickens from chicks so this is my first time to buy "older" birds (even though 11 weeks isn't that old.)

Does this behavior seem odd to anyone and do you have anything I might try to get them more comfortable? I got cochins because of how incredibly friendly they're supposed to be- I hope these guys come around eventually.

thanks!
Frances

Hi Frances,
How old are they? I have Cochins that I've hatched from eggs, some of them at 6 weeks are use to me handling them although they don't love it. They still run from me. I also have some at 4 weeks old that scream like you've described! Sometimes I worry the neighbors will call PETA on me. I also have adult girls that allow me to pick them up and carry them around the yard like puppies.
I would think what you've described is a "normal" behavior and it just takes time.
Relax and enjoy them is all I can offer...

Hello,
I posted this in the incubation section, but no one responded, so I am hoping someone here will know.

I have a Genesis 1588 on its second hatch. Both times I ran the incubator for several days and seems to get up to 99.5, but when I put eggs in it seems to drop. The first hatch it dropped and finally warmed up after a few hours, but so far on this hatch it hasn't. I wouldn't be concerned, but my thermostat light stopped working completely.

I just put the eggs in last night. I have the analog thermometer that came with the incubator on top of the eggs, off to one side of the thermostat and it is reading at 99. I have 2 different digitals (both are brand new- one has a hygrometer which is reading at 39% humidity) sitting on the wire floor of the incubator next to each other and both are reading 97.5. Should I trust the digitals sitting on the bottom of the incubator or the analog on top of the eggs?

Thanks!
Melissa

Hey! I just PMed you! No, it is a forced air....my last hatch 2 hatched out on day 21, 10 on day 22 and 2 on day 23- so now I am thinking it is a little low? I will put one of the digitals on the turner next to the eggs and give it 20 min to see what it says.
